Like any constructive conversation, it’s important to have established trust in advance. That said, regularly connecting with the parents is super important. When having a hard conversation, I typically start by requesting uninterrupted time with the parent to ensure we are both engaged and ready to discuss. From there, I will use a positive-constructive-positive method; I start with things that are going really well, things I appreciate, etc. Then, I will address the constructive pieces needed. And finally, I will ensure I leave on the highest note possible (this is something we can definitely work through, etc.).
