Early learning providers can create a “serve and return” environment in their classrooms by prioritizing responsive and reciprocal interactions with children. By being present, attentive, and responsive to children’s cues, providers can demonstrate that their communication is valued. Encouraging back-and-forth conversations, following children’s lead in play, using rich language, and providing wait time for responses all contribute to fostering meaningful exchanges. Positive nonverbal cues, such as eye contact and body language, further enhance the supportive environment. By consistently implementing these strategies, providers can establish a dynamic that promotes responsive interactions and supports children’s cognitive, social, and emotional development.
