Animals can have a lasting impact on children. My niece was attacked by a German shepherd once and instead of being afraid of new dogs like one might think she still loves them! This is mostly likely do to her always having one while growing up and she understands that sometimes when a dog feels threatened they will defend. Now she is more cautious around dogs but still just as loving and excited to meet them.
