A daily schedule includes creating a routine that is age appropriate to the child that creates all sorts of active play and also independent play. Structure is key so that the child can really understand the concept of developing a routine. I like the idea of having que’s for the children to see when its time to do each activity.

I think the daily schedule should always be consistent starting as soon as they walk-in in the morning, meal and snack times, circle time, outside play, nap time…It gives the children comfort and stability.

To maintain a daily schedule for children, start with consistancy. Once routine is established, children will naturally flow through the day.

I would personally say stick to the same routine and times for playtime, meals, and resting and a steady bedtime at a regular time each evening. This provides children comfort and know what comes next.

For creating and maintaining a good routine and daily schedule it is critical to balance activity and rest. It is also important to prioritize child-led time while still incorporating provider-led time. Visuals can be a helpful tool for children, to help them get more familiar with the routine and daily schedule. It’s better to keep time blocks to the shorter side of things than the longer side, and when possible involve children in the planning process.

My advice would be to make a visual schedule as it would be helpful for children who don’t know how to read yet. It will allow them to use it as guide on what to expect next and it can help ease their minds to know only three “pictures” until its time to go home. They can look there and know what to expect without needing you to communicate that for them.

plan ahead and outline the day, I’ve found having it posted somewhere in the room makes it easier to stick to it.

One of the best tips for creating and maintaining a daily schedule is to keep it consistent but flexible. Predictability helps children feel safe, while flexibility allows you to adjust when unexpected things happen. Including a balance of active play, quiet time, meals, rest, and free choice helps meet children’s needs. Using visual schedules with pictures also supports younger children in understanding the routine. Smooth transition cues (like songs or countdowns) make moving from one activity to another easier.

Be consistent, but still flexible. Create a schedule where you alternate between different kinds of activities and observe how the children are reacting. Notice what times of day children are most alert or tired, and adapt the schedule accordingly. Adjusting your schedule to match the children’s energy helps prevent incidents, messes, and behavior issues.
