GuestApril 18, 2025 at 7:28 amCreating a healthy routine for children may be difficult at first and it is important to understand that it is a process. Being consistent in the sequence of activities, meals, and nap times is very helpful because children thrive when they know what to expect. Using transition songs is extremely beneficial when establishing a routine. Giving ten and five minute transition announcements about what activity will be next and when to start clean up. When lining up to go outside, singing the train song can help children follow the routine of staying together and walking.
-
Great insights, Ivonne! Consistency and engaging transitions like songs truly enhance children’s understanding of routines. Keep it up!

GuestApril 20, 2025 at 9:55 pmIt helps to have warnings before transitions (“2 minutes till we clean up and go to morning meeting,” or “once we put our dishes away we’re gonna wash our hands and head to our nap beds”). Also, having a schedule on display that they can look at, and having an arrow that can move so that teachers can show the kids that we are currently having small group play, or that we are passed nap and are about to go outside.
-
Great suggestions, Taryn! Warnings and visual schedules are effective tools for helping children transition smoothly.

Children under age 6 should not spend large amounts of time in staff-initiated, large group activities. For each age range (infants, toddlers, or preschoolers), design a daily schedule based on what you have already learned about child development and safe environments. Plan for a full day of care beginning at 7 a.m. and ending at 5:30 p.m. It is not important to plan each activity—just to plan the daily schedule.

Creating and maintaining a daily schedule for children involves balancing consistency with flexibility. A predictable routine helps children feel secure, but it’s important to allow for adjustments when needed. Incorporating transition times, giving children choices, and ensuring activities match their attention spans are key to keeping them engaged. It’s also essential to include time for meals, rest, and outdoor play. Regularly reviewing and adjusting the schedule based on the children’s needs ensures it remains effective and supportive of their development.

Great suggestion! A detailed methodological guide can really help streamline activities and enhance the learning experience for children.

If things change just let them know.

My main advice for creating and maintaining a daily schedule is to give yourself plenty of time to transition. It’s really important for transitions to be lengthy and part of the routine. Kids should understand that transitions are about moving from one place or activity for the next, but they should not be rushed. Generally, difficulties in transitioning are the most common in creating and maintaining a schedule. Making sure that you give yourself ample time to prepare and deal with slow kids, a crazy classroom, etc., is crucial to an effective daily schedule.
-
Great insight, M! Emphasizing transitions helps children feel secure and understand the flow of their day. Well said!

One big tip for maintaining a schedule is allowing the possibility of a change in any activity. It is important to prepare for the fact that things may not always go according to plan based on the children’s mood that day. It is important to create a base schedule that is able to be moved around when needed, while still keeping the main components you want to do. For example needing to switch the times you do art and sensory, but still having the time to do both during the day.
-
Great insight, Mikayla! Flexibility in a schedule truly supports children’s needs and enhances their learning experience.
