  • Managing Head Lice in Child Care Centers

In the Little Sunshine Child Care Center, Miss Emily made a surprising
discovery: one of the children had head lice, which worried the staff.
They were determined to handle it quickly and take immediate action.
What are four steps you can suggest for Little Sunshine Child Care
Center to ensure the safety and well-being of all the children in their
    care ?

Need to communicate the situation to the child’s parents or guardians promptly.

Perform head lice screenings on all children in the center.

Implement treatment within the child care center.

    Educate staff, parents, and children

    1. Let the child’s parent understand it’s not life threatening to eliminate any form of fears but exclude the child from contact with others until treatment is started.
    2. Consider a nit check on staff and students.
    3. Arrange for the child’s pick-up with a minimal amount of disruption.
    4. Provide the parents with louse control instructions and some home remedies

Inform parents of the child infected, isolate the child until pick up, do a class check on staff and children, treat room, give parents of the child information on head lice treatment, notify the other parents of children in the class of a lice case. Don’t make a big deal of it.

With lice, parents should be advised to treat their child’s hair with a product designed to kill lice. In order to prevent spread, schools should be advised to avoid sharing, maintain hygienic practices and conduct regular checks.

    1. Being kind, and gentle, separate kid from contact with others. 2. Inform caregivers/parents. 3. Check for nits on all other students/teachers.4. Arrange pick up for child without causing a lot of disruption. After caregiver/parent arrives provide them with louse control instructions.
