Yes, I’ve dealt with biting — and here’s how I handle itBiting is one of those behaviors that almost every childcare provider encounters at some point, especially with toddlers. I’ve learned that it’s rarely about aggression. Most of the time, biting comes from frustration, teething, limited language, overstimulation, or wanting space. When biting happens, I stay calm and respond immediately but gently. I comfort the child who was bitten first, then I guide the child who bit by naming the behavior and offering a better option. I might say, “Biting hurts. You can use your words or come get a teacher when you need help.” I avoid shaming and instead focus on teaching. After things settle, I watch closely to understand what triggered the behavior so I can prevent it next time.Tips for Creating a Positive Environment That Reduces Biting1. Teach simple communication skillsMany biting incidents happen because children don’t yet have the words they need. I model phrases like:• “My turn please”• “Stop”• “I don’t like that”• “Help me”Even if they can’t say the words yet, hearing them consistently helps.2. Provide plenty of sensory outletsSome children bite because they need oral stimulation. I offer:• Teething rings• Chewable sensory toys• Crunchy snacks• Cold washclothsThis gives them a safe alternative.3. Watch for patternsI pay attention to:• Time of day• Specific children involved• Overcrowded play areas• Transitions• Fatigue or hungerOnce you know the pattern, prevention becomes much easier.4. Keep the environment calm and predictableA peaceful, well‑organized classroom reduces frustration. I make sure:• There are duplicates of popular toys• Children have space to move• Transitions are smooth• Expectations are consistentA calm environment leads to calmer children.5. Stay close during high‑risk momentsIf I know a child is in a biting phase, I stay nearby during:• Group play• Sharing situations• Overstimulating activitiesProximity alone can prevent many incidents. Why This Approach Works• It protects children’s emotional safety• It teaches communication and self‑regulation• It avoids shame and builds trust• It focuses on prevention, not punishmentBiting is a phase, and with the right support, children move through it successfully.

Luckily I’ve never had to deal with biting in my program. It’s primarily due to the age group I work with. However, we do encourage our students to “use their words and not the hands” to talk to others when upset. Something similar may work for teachers who deal with biting.

I have never had students bite each other but i have had them hit from being upset. I always have a discussion with the one that hit and together we discuss ways to better communicate how we feel and other ways we can express how that made us feel without having to hit the other student.

Yes, I have worked with children who bite.I stay calm, keep everyone safe, and comfort the child who was hurt. Then I tell the child, “Biting hurts,” and teach simple words like “my turn” or “help.”To prevent biting, I keep the classroom calm, teach turn-taking, and help children use words when they feel upset

Biting is hard. Make sure the center you work with has a policy and a plan for biting. Then everyone knows what to expect if the behavior occurs.

Yes, I have dealt with biting before. I was bit by a kid, I talk to the child who bit me in a calm and simple way, explaining that biting hurts and we need to use gentle hands. I try to help the child learn better ways to communicate their needs or feelings.

I personally do not have a lot of experience with biting, most of my students have either never been into it or have outgrown it by the time they have been in my room but I do cover in rooms with heavy biters, I usually tend to separate the students and then keep said biter on a one to one ratio and just keep as close of an eye on them as possible

when usually, I faced a bitting situation with a child, first I separate the children who are involved. I sit the child who bite and care for the child whom got bitten first so I can comfort and apply first aid to the child. Then I would pay my attention to the child who bite and talked to him/her and tell them that ” No Bitting and bitting hurts. ” also I ask them “if they like someone bites them and hurt them” and wait for their answer. At the mean time I give them “thinking time” to think about what they did and keep him/her for few minutes from playing or engaging in the activity we are doing. however if this is a recurring situation we read books about biting, show small clips about biting and why we shouldn’t be doing that. every bitting situation, we let parents know that this happened and discuss the plans/ resolution we could do to avoid these kind of situations.

Many years ago, I had a 15-month-old boy that LOVED to bite this one particular girl’ I mean everyday 2-4 times a day’ I went to workshops dedicated to biting, I bought every teething toy on the market, snacks that were chewy all the things’ I ended up keeping the 2 of the separated one was in the high chair with toys and snacks while the other one played freely’ then I would switch them . the families were so kind about the whole thing because they knew I was really trying. so, it turns out the bitter’s parents would give him “love bites” on his neck. turns out the bitter was giving love to the little girl. and, let me tell you as they got a little older, he would say he was going to marry her, he was and is now a sweet boy. I am still friends with both families, and the kids are in their twenties

Yes, I’ve dealt with kids biting. I usually first address the child’s needs whether hunger, overwhelm, or tiredness. Sometimes, the child simply needs my attention, so I get down to eye level and spend some play time with them.

When dealing with children who bite or who have bitten i often focus on separating the two children first and checking on the child that got bitten and comforting them and cleaning the bite mark. i would then talk to the child that bit and tell them that biting hurts and we dont do it. then try and find out why the biting occured in the first place to try and prevent an incident like that from happening agin.

I have not had a student that had a biting issue in my classroom and have no stories to tell. However, in the future I have learned some strategies number one stay calm and investigate the cause that the child might be biting and how to respond when a child bit another child. A child that has a biting problem sound difficult and can be but having steps to help the victim as well as the biter will help in the future.
