I take time for myself, read, write, it usually means i am overstimulated generally and need some introverted time.

I have been quite careful in this new job to “not take it home with me” so as to not get compassion fatigue, since I have experienced that working with children before. That said, this daycare does not have a lot of children experiences huge numbers of ACEs. Most live in middle-class homes, frequently with both parents, and have their needs met always. I have not had to make any calls to CPS, or had any concerns about a child’s wellbeing. However, when I do get compassion fatigue, I tend to focus on spending time with my own child and meeting my mental health needs like taking a break, or visiting the horses. Spending time outdoors (while not always practical in winter) tends to really help me refresh.

When compassion fatigue sets in, pause and listen to your heart. Breathe. Reach out to someone you trust. Care for your spirit through rest, creativity, or quiet moments. Like tending a garden, nourish yourself so you can continue to bloom for the children who need your light.

As an early childhood learning provider what is needed when one starts to feel compassion fatigue is to revaluate on one’s emotions and understand that those aren’t facts. To revaluate does not mean to give up but to create a plan of attack to understand your wants and needs.

Having people to turn to that can listen to you and offer solutions when you feel at the end of your rope.

I think it’s really important to be able to communicate with your co-workers so that they are able to help support you

I speak with other coworkers and ask for advice on what I should do and what to do to help me, so I start to not feel compassion fatigued. I also take breaks and recollect myself.

My strategy is to talk through my struggles, that way I can have a new perspective and reassess my situation.

Open communication with peers or partner is critical and taking time to de stress. Personally I like to read books or go out in nature for the weekend like camping to destress.
