I like to talk with coworkers and take some time to myself that week. Doing the things I like by myself helps me recharge my battery.

When I start feeling compassion fatigue, I take time to rest and focus on self-care, like walking, deep breathing, or spending quiet time alone. I also talk with my coworkers or supervisor to share my feelings and get support. Taking breaks helps me recharge and continue caring for children with patience and empathy.

When I start feeling compassion fatigue, it’s a sign that I need to take a step back from the situation that is causing it in order to care for myself and reflect. I find that when I do these things I can lessen the effects of compassion fatigue and look at a situation with a different perspective, which helps me adjust my approach. It can also be really helpful to talk with other teachers for feedback and validation as well as advice.

When I begin to feel fatigue I remind myself to take a break and engage in self-care. I take quick breaks to breathe, stretch, or step away briefly when I am able. I acknowledge that talking with a coworker or supervisor for support instead of bottling everything up is another form of self-care.

When I notice I start to feel compassion fatigue, it is important to talk to trusted coworkers. I also need to put time and energy into activities I enjoy even if I am emotionally tired from work (going on walks, making plans with friends, etc).

I go to counseling every week to talk through the stressors in my life and build coping mechanisms. I talk about my stress at work and in relationships, and work with my counselor to build resiliency and self-confidence.

When I start to feel compassion fatigue, I try to acknowledge my own feelings and remind myself that it’s normal to feel tired sometimes. It helps me to take small breaks during the day, even just a few minutes to breathe or walk around.I also seek support from my coworkers by talking about how I feel and sharing experiences, which helps me not carry the emotional load alone. Sometimes, reflecting on why I love working with children and remembering positive moments gives me energy and motivation to keep doing my best.

I try to communicate to the other teachers in the classroom that I am struggling with compassion in that moment. Overall, I try to find outlets for filling up my bucket. Spending social time with friends and family, playing sports, and camping with my dog and partner. Ultimately having the proper amount of work life balance has helped me with compassion fatigue.
