Emotional regulation in children

I think some of the best ways to help children recognize their emotions and control their responses would be listening to them and encouraging them to discuss their feelings and needs, as well as displaying it for them yourself. Acting out certain feelings or desires can help show the children healthy ways to cope, understand or respond.

Yes, I think it’s so good to validate their emotions and not shut them down.

    Call feelings by their name.

Managing emotions begins with naming them. Help kids learn by naming your own emotions out loud as you go through the day, and guiding them to do the same. Use an expansive vocabulary.

Reading books about feelings help children to see the emotion, and then you can ask the children ” what does your mad face look like?” ” oh those are pretty mad faces how can we turn our mad faces into happy faces?” and let the children lead the conversation. Also practicing breathing techniques at circle time

One of the best ways you can help a child recognize their emotion is by allowing them to express the emotions
when they’re not sure how they’re feeling and respond to that in a positive manner demonstrating you understand them.

I think something to remember is that kids don’t always know what they are feeling, understand why they are feeling it/what causes it, and what if anything they can do about it. They just know that everything is so much and it’s really overwhelming! Trying to help name emotions can be a good place to start (“it was really frustrating when so and so took your colored pencil away from you when you were still using it, huh?” and so on). Then you can try to help give them the tools to deal with the situation. Such as when somebody tries to take something from you and you’re really frustrated, instead of hitting the other child you can say “I’m using that, wait your turn please”, or get a teacher for help.

Listen to them. Ask them simple questions to get them to think.

    Empathize with them.

Ask the children to share their experiences. Throughout the day, help children learn to label their own emotions (e.g., it looks like you are feeling mad that we can’t go outside; what can we do to help you feel better?) While reading stories to children, have children guess how the characters in the story are feeling.

It is important to label emotions while kids are expressing/feeling them so that kids learn what each emotion means and makes the mind and body feel like. Teach the kids strategies to reduce stress and to understand what the emotion is trying to tell them. Help them to practice constructive emotional control and who they can go to for support.

holding space for them to feel before you discuss will give you a clearer picture of their process. if you saw a chain of events that lead to the outburst, describe how that would make YOU feel so they hear that you empathize and want to help.
