Relationships are built through frequent conversation about a family’s child and the events of the day, the provider’s observations, etc. Providers should strive for honest discussion and vulnerability rather than overconfidence–providers have expertise in child development generally but families are experts in their own children. Conversation can bring these two domains of expertise together in a positive, creative way.

MemberNovember 1, 2025 at 5:24 pmCreating and maintaining a good partnership between caregivers and childcare providers starts with a welcoming presence each morning and partnering to help their child’s transition to the school day. Opportunities for communication should be known to families (including both set conferences and curriculum nights and ways to connect as their child’s needs arise). It is important to learn from the caregivers the best form of communication for them (which caregiver to reach out to first, email or phone call, etc.). It is also imperative that childcare providers make an effort to understand family background and incorporate representation into the classroom. When a conflict arises, it is important to hear out the caregivers and then refocus onto the common goal of supporting the child to the best of our ability.
-
Great insights, Remi! Your emphasis on communication and understanding family backgrounds is key to building strong partnerships.

MemberNovember 3, 2025 at 4:57 pmI first start with naming the things that the child is having success with and then begin to discuss challenges they are having, ask the family what they are seeing at home, solutions they have found successful and then offer any suggestions or resources I may have to support both the child and the family.

MemberNovember 5, 2025 at 3:04 amI think it’s important to share plenty of positive feedback and observations about children’s interests with their families. This helps families trust you and believe that you see their child as an individual. It’s also important because negative feedback can be difficult to hear, and ideally positive feedback should far outweigh negative feedback throughout communication with parents.
-
Great insight, Jenny! Focusing on positive feedback fosters trust and strengthens the partnership between families and childcare providers.
