MemberMarch 31, 2023 at 8:47 pmMy advice for creating and maintaining good partnerships between caregivers and childcare staff would be to keep communication open and approach difficult and challenging conversations objectively. It’s also important to be open to discourse with parents and explain to them why you suggest a certain method of action for their child.

MemberApril 1, 2023 at 7:23 pmThe sandwich technique is great, sympathizing and then repeating what’s needed help “I totally understand your challenges with this, we just ask you do the best you can. If Johnny comes home in wet clothes from water day bc he didn’t have that extra pair then we’ll deal with it the best we can. Some days are like that.”

Have open and regular communication. Effective communication is key to a good partnership. Establish a consistent routine and schedule helps with stability for the child and ensures that everyone is on the same page. Positive reinforcement where you celebrate successes and progress, and recognize the efforts of both the caregivers/parents and the childcare provider. Also be flexible, recognize that unexpected situations may arise and be willing to work together to find solutions that work for everyone involved.

MemberApril 11, 2023 at 12:04 amMake an unexpected phone call or send an e-mail to a parent to let them know their child is having a great day or to share a brief story about something kind, helpful, or funny their child did or said. Learn about each family, including their culture, interests or jobs of each parent.

Host several community-building events / opportunities throughout the school year, plan on parent-teacher conferences in the fall and spring and reach out in-between to address any concerns along the way. By having community building opportunities, parents / caregivers are less likely to feel like they are on the outside. They have opportunities to connect with teachers and other families during field trips, special classroom visits and special school events. This would build their confidence and they would feel more trusting of the teachers and school program.

always greet them positively, tell them something good about the day and then maybe something that could’ve happened outside of the norm, and then say they hope they have a good evening and that I am excited to see what tomorrow brings.

Some advice for creating and maintaining a good partnership between caregivers/parents and childcare providers would be to communicate often. Let them know what their child has been doing and learning. Be respectful, professional, and understanding.

MemberApril 16, 2023 at 1:22 amMy advice is, approach the parent the way you would want to be approached, with absolute respect. The common denominator between the 2 parties is the child, the parent is the primary educator and should be respected as such. The sandwich idea is always a great way to start and end, with absolute love and concern for the child!!

MemberApril 16, 2023 at 2:02 amTo maintain a good partnership between children and families, ensure you’re setting the correct tone and building a good foundation through simple things like a warm greeting when you say them, neutral “I feel” or “I observe” objective statements rather than opinions that could potentially be condescending or not understanding, all in all, making sure that the family knows they are welcome in the classroom and that it is a safe space for everyone. Initial interactions, especially things like first and second impressions, and integral in maintaining positive partnerships with children and their families.
