How do you think early learning providers can create a “serve and return” environment in their classrooms?

I think singing, and painting are “serve and return” activities. We could use those ones

Early learning providers can ensure the classroom has materials that will encourage a serve and return exchange, from books to toys or manipulatives. Providers need to monitor children to complete serves so that they can complete a return.

How do you think early learning providers can create a “serve and return” environment in their classrooms?

When children show interest in an activity, providers can share the children’s interest and engage them verbally. Depending on the age the type of back and forth will vary. But by engaging children consistently in their interests and following their cues, providers can create an environment where the child wants to engage and feels encourage to explore and over time they will do it in more complex ways.

By setting up a classroom with toys and materials that engage children with curiosity and exploration. Examples:

-Dramatic play : may include dress up or dolls of different professions

-Kitchen: children can pretend to cook which is something most kids observe daily

-Cars and moving objects: pushing and pulling these objects often sparks their curiosity about how things move

-Magnitiles: not only exploring magnets but they can create endless things with them

All these can be caregiver facilitated and modeled for young children.

There would be plenty of opportunities throughout the day like circle time, reading together, free play and outside time. For eg, when kids are bored, I would encourage children on picking their own interest of activity like drawing/ dance party/ reading with teacher etc and divide kids into smaller groups and get involved with them in that particular activity. This method works great for me in creating a serve and return setting.

Taking the time to be mindful towards the child, and allowing kids to be more comfortable in making choices such as “no coat or coat”, not finishing their food, allowing them to pick certain toys or books.

Big one: let child to express opinions and feelings when they cry or have emotions that may seem like outbursts.

Communication and reliability are two great ways to create a “serve and return” environment for your kids. Positive reinforcement, two-way communication, and consistency all develop trust and support the educational procress.

As an early learning provider “serve and return” environment is something that happens daily in a classroom. Some of the activities like art and sensory play there is a lot of opportunity for “serve and return”, explaining what is happening, engaging with them, and asking questions about what is happening during and activity. Or when going out on walks/being outside in nature, teachers point out surroundings and explain weather, plants, animals.

I think that make a new game with the kids and have them make the rules with you and have with them.

There are many games and activities that you can play that promote serve and return.

Some ideas for serve and return interaction is to present an activity the children can create for themselves with playdough or sand for example so they can get creative. You can show them your idea first and interact by asking them questions as they are building.

How do you think early learning providers can create a “serve and return” environment in their classrooms? a child serves by showing interest, we can “return” by interacting with them. By talking, facial expressions and naming words or description. Also by listening and taking turns as well as waiting.

One instance during the day that providers can engage in serve + return is during free play. This is an easy way to follow the child’s interest and help them build knowledge upon their interest. You can also teach them new things using their interest as an example, or help them refine motor skills while playing.
