Activities like sharing and taking turns can be encouraged during play time, and find other activities to do based on interests that the children have shown to you.

Early learning caregivers can provide a “serve and return” environment in their classroom by interacting with the children in their care. This interaction happens when children reach out to adults and the adult, caregiver responds in kind.

Making sure we are talking and interacting with the kids on their level. If they talk of babble at you, talk back. Encourage them, nod and point at things they point at, tell them what it is or ask if the know.

During arts and crafts for example, early learning professionals may ask children what he or she is making.

One “serve and return” activity can be doing a puzzle with a child. There is lots of opportunity for trail and err and encouragement.

Early learning providers can create a “serve and return” environment in their classroom by offering choices of activities for the child to choose and allowing them to interact with it, while we show them how to use it, name it, and we both take turns using it until the child wants to finish.
-
When outside you can observe when the child is looking at something in nature. You can then come up to them and talk to them about what they are seeing. Listen to them and also show enthusiasm.

MemberNovember 13, 2023 at 3:37 amEarly learning providers can create the serve and return environment but focusing on each child with want interests them and incorporating it into group activities. Its helpful to incorporate right away and not waiting weeks or even days. When a child realizes that you react with them it gives them more trust and encouragement to keep doing things. Another way to bring this into the classroom, is actually playing and interacting with each child instead of just displaying a new activity for them to do. Do it along with them so that you are able to communicate with them in the moment.

MemberNovember 13, 2023 at 3:05 pmI think a great serve and return activity is arts and crafts. The way we set it up in our center is by putting all supplies in the middle of the table so all children have access. However, they have to actively support each other by passing, sharing, or supporting. This includes both teachers and students.

You could do painting or really any interactive activity, by Being able to response to what the child finds interesting is a way you can implement serve and return.
