Creating a “serve and return” environment in early learning classrooms involves fostering responsive interactions between educators and children. This approach is based on the concept of back-and-forth exchanges, much like a tennis match, where communication and engagement are reciprocal. In a Pre-K classroom, it would be best to use it during center times or free centers time. It can be also during when the class has to take turns and play a game or during morning meetings.

Early learning providers can create a “serve and return” environment in thier classroom by sharing the focus. When a child is interested in something, the adult should respond to thier interest by paying close attention to the thing that the child is noticing. This helps build the curiosity of the child which will lead to stronger brains. Facial expressions, motions, etc can also encourage a child. When you return a child’s serve, it makes important connections in thier brain. This building happens before a child begins to talk.

arts and crafts is a good time for serve and return because you can ask what they child is working on, praise them for their work, sit down and do art with them and give help if needed.

Doing a really simple and easy kid friendly cooking project would be a great for serve and return. Other potential options are engaging in play and having face to face conversations.

Serve and return can be almost anything. I think that having many opportunities for this type of interaction is important. Different toys/games, music, reading, and circle time all are examples of activities in which finding these opportunities should be both easy and many.

By engaging in active listening with the child, speaking in small clear sentences, displaying emotions clearly, and fully engaging with them rather than rushing through them. Take things slow and mirror their temperament (dancing, pointing, attention, pretend play).

Early learning providers play a crucial role in creating a “serve and return” environment in their classrooms, which involves fostering responsive and interactive relationships between educators and young children. To achieve this, educators should pay close attention to children’s cues and respond promptly to their needs, questions, or initiatives, building trust and security. Actively engaging in back-and-forth conversations, observing and following children’s interests, and providing a safe and nurturing environment are key strategies. Positive reinforcement, play-based learning activities, and encouraging peer interactions contribute to a dynamic learning atmosphere. Flexibility in lesson planning, modeling positive communication, and building strong relationships with families are also essential components. By implementing these strategies, early learning providers create an environment that promotes serve-and-return interactions, supporting children’s social, emotional, and cognitive development.

To teach the kiddos fun and cleaning up and organizing, we let them grab all the bins of toys and they have fun dumping them in the middle of the floor then, they all take turns being a leader by asking the other kids to hand them toys to separate and put in bins all organized and it teaches them to put like toys in one bin and to clean up and to be leaders and students.

During free play the provider can sit with a child that’s playing with blocks and use the 5 steps of serve and return. which is share and focus, support and encourage, name it, take turns back and forth, and lastly practice endings and beginnings. Same goes for circle time! I think circle time is the best time to do this! you could be reading a book, singing the seasons of the year ect. The 5 steps can also be used during outside time. Asking the kids to tell you what they see outside and use the steps while having fun outside. For me I love to sit with my students during snack time or lunch and ask them questions about what they might like or sometimes we play ispy together and we all do this as a team. It’s one of my favorite times of the day!

Creating a “serve and return” environment in classrooms means having meaningful conversations with the children. When they talk or express themselves, respond with warmth and attention. Encourage them to share their thoughts and listen patiently. This back-and-forth exchange helps build a caring and supportive atmosphere in the classroom, where each child feels valued and heard.

Serve and Return can be utilized in many different ways within the classroom, through arts and crafts, circle time, or even during free play and engaging a child in their own interests. All present opportunities for serve and return.

The importance is on being around the child and playing with them, not for them. This means giving the child time to interact and respond and doing the back and forth with he child. This is also recognizing when the child is done with the activity and ready to move on.

Evalie’s understanding of serve and return in the classroom is on point. It’s crucial to engage in reciprocal interactions with children to support their development effectively.
