We can create a serve and return environment in their classrooms by playing with the children and be aware that when a child shows interest in something they are serving. a return in an adult would be them responding in a supportive way. They can share the focus, support and encourage, naming items, take turns back and forth, and practice endings and beginnings.

I think with projects such as Legos, or other arts and crafts activities the children are always using their creativity, and imagination to make something, and that gives a lot of opportunities to serve and return!

Types of serve and return techniques include structured circle time, along with specific retrieval and clean-up activities.

Azucena, your idea of one-on-one interaction during teacher time is excellent for promoting serve and return in the classroom. Keep fostering meaningful interactions!

<div>You can create serve and return environments in the classroom by including with the children in circle times with their peers. During this time you can include each child by name, sing, etc. Individually this can be included by showing interest in what the child is doing and by going around the room child to child, to show this attention. Positive early learning environments start with you when you create a positive social and emotional environment that is built on caring and responsive relationships. Children can’t explore and learn, experience joy and wonder, until they feel secure. They need to trust their caregivers and know their needs will be met. You are the most important part of the early learning environment. Offering young children calm, nurturing, and predictable social and emotional environments, and promoting their self-regulation skills, helps them feel safe and secure so they can learn, play, and grow.</div>

I personally observe at out school that circle gets the children focused and interested in new works and our daily songs we sing.

How do you think early learning providers can create a “serve and return” environment in their classrooms?

Utilize the “5 steps for brain building”:

    1. Share the focus

    2. Support and encourage

    3. Name it (what they are doing, seeing, or feeling)

    4. Take turns, back and forth

    5. Practice endings and beginnings

I think it’s important to be able to share different kinds of interactions with the child during the serve and return interactions. Maybe with stations, like a reading station or building station, so that it’s easy to shift interests to share and focus.

Great insight, Tiffany! Using different interaction stations can indeed enhance serve and return interactions in the classroom. Diverse activities can engage children’s interests effectively.

Early learning providers can create a “serve and return” environment in their classrooms by actively engaging with children in responsive interactions. This involves listening to children’s cues, responding promptly and appropriately, and building on their interests and contributions. By fostering positive relationships, providing nurturing interactions, and encouraging communication and exploration, educators can create an environment where children feel valued, supported, and eager to learn.

I believe in listening to the children and letting them know their thoughts and dreams are valid. When a child is really interested in something its important to listen to them and support them.

I think a great way to create a serve and return environment with children would be to do arts and crafts, play-dough, basically anything interactive where a child can create whatever they choose- using their imagination.
