When a child shows interest or says something, the teacher listens and responds. This helps children feel understood and encourages them to communicate more. Teachers also make sure to build trusting relationships with children by being there for them and making them feel safe. They use questions that encourage children to think and talk more. Overall, it’s about making sure children feel comfortable and supported in talking and sharing their thoughts.

I think arts and crafts are a great way to engage children in serve and return.

Fernanda, it’s great that you’re encouraging independent exploration and curiosity in the classroom. It supports the serve and return interaction model. Keep fostering their autonomy!

-
Free time allows children to engage in various different activities within their interests. This would be a good setting for engaging in “serve and return” on their terms weather its reading a book they choose, playing with a toy or role playing.
-
We can use serve and return during free play by asking a child open ended questions about what they would like to play with. Follow their focus and interact with the objects they show interest in.

MemberJuly 26, 2024 at 7:49 pmCreating a “serve and return” environment in early learning classrooms is all about fostering responsive and engaging interactions between caregivers and children. Start by being attentive and observant, watching for cues from the children and responding promptly. This helps build trust and encourages communication.
Make the environment engaging by providing stimulating, age-appropriate materials and interactive spaces where children can explore and learn. Encourage communication by engaging in conversations, actively listening, and expanding on what the children say to help develop their language skills.
Model positive interactions by demonstrating social skills, encouraging turn-taking, and using positive reinforcement. Support children’s emotional development by helping them express their feelings and providing comfort when they’re upset.
Promote cooperative play and guide children in resolving conflicts to foster peer interactions. Establish consistent routines with predictable schedules and incorporate bonding activities to create a sense of security.
Involve families by maintaining regular communication and respecting their cultural practices, which helps reinforce the connection between home and school. Finally, pursue continuous professional development in child development and engage in reflective practice to keep improving your skills.
By being responsive and interactive, early learning providers can create a nurturing environment that supports children’s development and fosters a love of learning.

An example would be during arts and crafts, asking what the are they making, what colors they will use, what materials they would like to use, and providers asking how they can achieve the end goal with their project.

MemberJuly 28, 2024 at 11:36 pmEarly learning providers can do serve and return throughout the day in their classroom, in planned and unplanned activities. Showing and interest in what your learners are learning/doing is one way in which we able to share the focus, throughout we encourage and support them with our language and physical support if needed, we name what we are doing so they are able to connect what they are doing to other future learning activities, we take turns discussing and sharing ideas with peers and teachers and we practice endings and beginnings through changing topics and activities.
-
Danielle, you’ve provided a comprehensive understanding of serve and return in the classroom, highlighting the importance of interaction and support in early learning settings. Well done!

MemberJuly 29, 2024 at 6:03 pmSomething we like to do is read a book together – so simple but it’s a great serve and return activity. We choose a book with fun pictures, something that gives lots of space to chat about. We read it aloud to the child and make sure we pause and point at pictures describing what we are seeing. We encourage our child to respond by asking questions like ‘can you find the dog in this picture?’ We then acknowledge their response and provide them verbal affirmation of their work. And we continue this back and forth through the book. This back and forth helps build on their language skills, builds trust between the child and caregiver and supports their cognitive development through the interactive communication.
-
Sadie, your approach to reading aloud is fantastic! It creates a supportive and interactive environment, promoting language development and strengthening the caregiver-child bond. Great job!

They can do severe and return by showing the kid the same eyesight like the child by showing them that you are very interested by the item they are looking at and making sure you follow them and change the play toy when they are done
