When we are running activities whether it is in circle time, in centers or even outside, we can create a ‘serve and return’ environment in the classroom. Teaching our children and passing along that knowledge will allow them to flourish and become an example for others.

Learning providers can do this by noticing what the child/children are interested in. They might also use encouragement as well as facial cues.

Sitting with children and making an effort to be patient and present with them is a great service for them. In response, they will with time develop a relationship with you and learn to also be more present with you.

One of my favorite serve and return activities is one we do during snack time. First I ask one of the kiddos if they have a question in mind then I let that child pick who they are going to ask that question to. After that, we answer the question, and the kid who answered the question gets to think of one and ask another kid that question. After every kid has asked and answered a question, I ask them what their favorite comment they heard and why it was their favorite. This activity, it gives them the opportunity to explore the topics we discussed and form their own opinions on them.

I think guided play is a great and affective way to implement the serve and return as a child can show interest and the provider can respond.

Making sure to always being attentive when a child is talking to you. Not responding to them or ignoring them is not a good way to have that serve and return. Circle time could be a good time for this asking the individual child questions or playing a game, can encourage the serve and return.

You can create a serve and return moment in circle time. By talking about the weather, showing cards that prompt them to figure out which matches the current weather, asking them what we should wear outside, if it’s cold or hot. Engaging with the child and asking them questions and being patient enough to listen to their answers.

Being patient enough to get the answers is always the best process. Be sure that each child has their own time.

You can try to make time to have individual time with each child as well as group time to create activities to support and encourage the children. You can ask questions, use manners, praise, or encourage them to explore their curiosity when learning about colors, shapes, or their favorite toys.

Serve and return can be used in class when there is free play, encourage they’re interests and help them understand the concept of sharing.

I work in a pre school classroom and during center time (play time) it’s a good time to show them how to play a game, watch them learn to set it up and come up with new takes on rules/be done when ever they want is a helpful time for serve and return.

Observing students create new rules and options for games is extremely helpful in seeing how they think and process problem solving.

Early Learning providers can create a serve and return environment by responding to the child’s needs in an appropriate way.

I asked the 3 kids that were done with breakfast to find their favorite book and bring it to me for circle time

We can take notice when a child points or serves to us by returning it with attention and encouragement. We can also provide toys and other objects to help with the serve and return process.

I think that circle time is a great way to get that more individualized time with the kids. In Montessori setting the individual work times give teacher a great opportunity to do this as well.
