MemberApril 30, 2025 at 7:38 pmIn this situation, I would remain calm and professional when Mrs. Hopkins arrives. I would kindly remind her of the program’s pickup policy and the importance of being on time. Then, I would schedule a private conversation to discuss the repeated late pickups, listen to her circumstances, and work together on a solution—such as helping her explore backup options or adjusting expectations—while also reinforcing the need to respect staff time and program rules.
-
I would ask Mrs. Hopkins if there is anyway I can help her with her issue of running late. I’d ask if there was a reason and remind her gently that her baby needs to be picked up at 5:30.

MemberMay 1, 2025 at 9:05 pmExplain respectfully to the parent that 20 minutes does not seem that long but for the child it is because all of their classmates are already gone and it might make them feel left out and question why they are the only ones there by themselves and might be scary for the child. I would also ask the parents about their life and what is going on, If something is getting in the way of them being able to pick their child up on time and if there is making a plan with the parent for the child.

Amani, your response demonstrates empathy and understanding of the child’s feelings. Engaging the parent in conversation shows a supportive approach to addressing the situation. Great job!

Leidy, your insight into the emotional impact on children is invaluable. Open communication with parents is essential, and your suggestions for fostering understanding and support are commendable. Great job!
-

I would talk to the parents ask them if they are okay and if a different solution for them getting their child at the correct time and explain to them that some kids tend to pick up on vibes and feelings of their parents and eventually kids start to become upset or embarrassed when being the last one always getting picked up
-
Great insight, Sarah! Your approach emphasizes empathy while addressing the impact on the child. Open communication with parents can foster understanding and lead to effective solutions. Well done!

MemberMay 5, 2025 at 4:18 amI would calmly talk with Mrs. Hopkins in private, express concern, and remind her of the center’s pickup policy. I would then ask if there’s a challenge I can help her with and explain that repeated late pickups affect staff and the child. I would try to work together on a plan to prevent it from happening again. And I would document the conversation if needed.
-
Great response, Natalia! Your approach of addressing the issue calmly and collaboratively shows empathy and professionalism. Documenting the conversation is also a wise step to ensure clear communication moving forward.

MemberMay 6, 2025 at 4:54 amI would discuss with her the cause of her lateness and try to find the optimal solution for her and her child while letting her know that it may affect her child if she is constantly picked up after all the other children have left.
-
I would welcome Mrs. Hopkins in and speak to her in a calm respectful manor while her child is cleaning up their toys. During this time I would remind her of our drop off and pick up policy and our centers hours. I would inquire on Mrs. Hopkins and see if there is anything she needs help with as far as getting to pick up on time. I would also ask if there is another family member nearby that could pick up her child for her when she is running late, so as to keep her child on a more consistent pick up time and not be at the center after hours. I would inform her that when a child is used to being picked up at a certain time, they become concerned and then irritable when “mom” isn’t there to pick them up yet. This leads to a distressing time for the child and is not the preferred way for them to end their day. I would definitely make note of this conversation and leave a copy for my director with “next steps.”

Most places charge extra for late pick ups and this usually resolves the issue.

If I were faced with this situation, I would approach Ms. Hopkins with empathy while maintaining professionalism and setting clear boundaries. I would first ensure her child is safe and cared for, then calmly and privately address the late pickups. I would explain the impact repeated lateness has on staff and center operations, referencing our center’s policies. I’d ask if there are any challenges she’s facing and listen without judgment to better understand her situation. I would offer support if possible—such as discussing alternative pickup arrangements or local resources—while reminding her of the importance of timely pickups. Finally, I would document the conversation and inform my supervisor, ensuring clear communication and consistency moving forward.

Rozlynn, your approach demonstrates a commendable blend of empathy and professionalism. Prioritizing the child’s safety while addressing the issue with understanding is essential for fostering a supportive environment. Great job!
