Warning signs of bullying include strong social cliques, power imbalances, and kids’ temperaments that want to feel powerful/in control. Parents and educators can reduce bullying by reinforcing positive, collaborative behavior, showing kids that bullying is “lame,” and pulling kids aside privately when bullying incidents occur. Setting clear expectations for kids’ behavior can help reduce bullying.

Bullying warning signs can include drop in grades, become angry, or lack of eating. Parents and educators can create a respectful and safe space for children. If a child feels comfortable opening up about what’s going on, the adult should respond calmly and listen.

When bullying occurs, adults should respond promptly by documenting incidents, supporting the targeted child, addressing the behavior with the child who is bullying, and involving families when appropriate. Encouraging bystanders to speak up or seek help from a trusted adult can also be an effective strategy. As someone with many years of experience working with children, I have found that building strong relationships and maintaining open communication with both children and families helps identify concerns early and creates a positive environment where bullying is less likely to occur.

I think always keeping an eye out and having good communication with students can help look for any regression in behavior and being able to set up rooms in a way where supervision can be clearer can help prevent bullying and allowing parent involvement in class can help reduce that as well
