Think about the children in your classroom. How do you incorporate reading into your daily routine to support language development? Can you share one or two strategies that have worked well for you to encourage early literacy skills?

I like to talk about the different types of books and let them see there are many ways to look at one. when begining reading, choosing something that appeals to them helps, and then begin doing a story walk, have them read the book by pictures, find the sight words and words they recognize. Sound the words out phonetically. If done well the kids respond positively and get excited to read.

In my class we have story time every day, and often twice a day. I also like to use reading to help with transition times. When kiddos finish eating, and cleaning up or if they have finished their art and others are still finishing up I have them grab a book. We have two different library areas they can choose to go. Many have their favorite books they like to pick out or read share and read together. I also encourage them to try to find the letter of the week in their books or sight words, or maybe find the letters in their names.

One way we incorporate reading in our daily schedule is by reading the daily schedule together as a class. Another way is by engaging with our peers names during playtime. One strategy that has supported my emerging readers is discussing letters and the sounds those letters make, and how to blend the sounds together staged by stage.

One way we incorporate reading in our daily schedule is by reading books during circle time and allowing students to pick out books that interest them.

I try to incorporate reading into our daily routine to support language development as often as possible; during lunchtime, during naptime/downtime, during circle time… This encourages early literacy skills and instills a love of books in young children to last a lifetime.

We do reading every day during circle time. We have lesson plans that we have to go by. If possible, we try to tie the story to what we are discussing. Sometimes books get repaeted as kids have favorites.

In my classroom I like to keep if very print rich, things are labeled and there are several areas where students can get books on there own. I have a science area that has science books, a cozy nook area where I keep familiar picture books along with a writing area that contains books. I read to my students in morning circle. That story is usually will focus on the day’s topic. I read a chapter book during rest time and in the last part of our day I will read a fun silly book.
