Teachers and caregivers can use observation and assessment to encourage respectful behavior in young children by making note and acknowledging positive behaviors, sharing, kindness, picking up when it’s time, etc. Bringing attention to behaviors that cause negative feelings or unwanted feelings of sadness and anger. If a child chooses not to share a toy, make note of it. And see how they progress in their ability to share over time. Does little Johnny not like to share anything, or just specific items. Is he not sharing?Because he wants to spend time alone, where did the other child do something causing him not to want to share with them. By observing and making assessments, we may be able to conclude that little Johnny may not understand how to share yet. And we can build on this to help him grow.
