In every classroom we have sensory bins with appropriate things in them to explore. In the day to day activities we do, we use questions to extend learning with the older kiddos. We will encourage the younger kids explore and touch and play with things they may not be familiar with by actually getting into the activity ourselves. We as teachers immerse into the activities and the children naturally want to follow.

At our center the kids bring their own lunches from home. While they eat I like to ask them about their food and we discuss the different colors, textures, shapes, and flavors.

I love teaching hands on. For example, I just got done teaching a lesson about the butterfly life cycle, we had real caterpillars, and the class was able to see the whole process. We then had a butterfly release day where we got to set them free and then were able to enjoy seeing the butterflies return for the rest of the day while they got familiar with their new surroundings.

One of my favorite things to do with the kiddos in my classroom is go on “mindful walks”. This is where we turn off our voices and only can use our ears to listen, our eyes to see, our noses to smell and our fingers to touch. Once we are back in the classroom we discuss as a group all the things we discovered using our senses during our mindful walk!

there is time during one month of the year that i have friends bring something from their culture that they can show the class like a culture show and tell. we all explore it and ask questions. It could be something they wear, something they decorate with or even a light snack that they eat for special occasions. the children LOVE it!

We go with the seasons right now as the weather gets colder the children have been exploring through dramatic play the different ways you can make soup and what you types of foods you would use to make soup inside the classroom and outside in our play kitchen. The children were introduced to the book Soup Day by Melissa Iwai. Also during lunch time if it is a soup today we talk about the ingredients where put in the soup we are eating. For example what vegetables were used. We also talk about what the types of soups the children have at home.

I like to add posters, and create activities that allow for a spark of ingenuity and creativity in my classrooms. I want kids to take initiative to learn and make a space where questions are encouraged.

We have a garden bin that we have the children grow plants in, including carrots and peas. We also have sensory bins that have a variety of toys alongside things such as flour or homemade play dough.
