I would welcome Mrs. Hopkins in and speak to her in a calm respectful manor while her child is cleaning up their toys. During this time I would remind her of our drop off and pick up policy and our centers hours. I would inquire on Mrs. Hopkins and see if there is anything she needs help with as far as getting to pick up on time. I would also ask if there is another family member nearby that could pick up her child for her when she is running late, so as to keep her child on a more consistent pick up time and not be at the center after hours. I would inform her that when a child is used to being picked up at a certain time, they become concerned and then irritable when “mom” isn’t there to pick them up yet. This leads to a distressing time for the child and is not the preferred way for them to end their day. I would definitely make note of this conversation and leave a copy for my director with “next steps.”
