GuestMarch 16, 2024 at 1:57 pmHand washing has been introduced as part of our daily program so it is not seen as a chore by children. We sing a song, sung to the tune of “Row, row, row your boat”. The lyrics are “wash, wash, wash your hands, don’t forget the soap. Lather up and rinse them off. Now your set to go”.
-
Great idea, Jenny! Using a song makes handwashing fun and memorable for kids.

GuestMarch 16, 2024 at 9:11 pmWe have a fun timer that plays music in the increments needed for handwashing. It starts playing when each child holds their hand in front of it. It dings when it’s time to go on to the next step. The kids dance to it as they wash their hands. They love it!

GuestMarch 17, 2024 at 8:03 pmMy students (18-24mo) love water and they would stay all day long in front of the sink, washing their hands. We sing a song or slowly count for each of them, to help them understand when to stop. We teach them to take turns, and fortunately, they are also excited to grab a paper towel from the dispenser to dry their hands, so they will move to that following step, allowing another classmate to wash the hands. I often model how I scrub my own hands.

Mihaela, your approach is fantastic! Incorporating music, counting, and modeling helps make handwashing fun and engaging for toddlers.

GuestMarch 20, 2024 at 2:02 amI sing songs, count/ clap with them in English and Spanish with them while they wash hands. I often stay close by the skin and show (out of what water for all too see) how to scrub bands and make sure I’m getting under my nails, wrists, in-between fingers ect. some kids like to pretend with me while waiting in line.
-
Maria, your approach of singing, counting, and involving kids in the handwashing process is engaging and inclusive. Great job!

GuestMarch 20, 2024 at 4:49 amThe kids at my daycare call me CC so I make a little song of it and “Let’s wash hand with CC” and try to make it upbeat and exciting. Another thing I’ve always done it making it like a game of going fast and slow. When scrubbing, I grab their hands and making their hands either scrub fast or scrub slow.
-
Great idea, Sierra! Incorporating a fun song and turning handwashing into a game is a great way to engage kids.

GuestMarch 21, 2024 at 3:12 amWe make it fun but making “scrubbing” our hands silly, as well as having them make sure they make “bubbles” (suds) with the soap while washing hands.

GuestApril 18, 2024 at 9:09 pmThe way I make handwashing most fun is by challenging them to see how soapy they can get their hands (with the correct amount of soap), sing fun songs, use fun scents and sometimes fun colored soap!
-
Great ideas, Dakota! Adding challenges, songs, scents, and colored soap can make handwashing fun and engaging for kids.
