I often work as a mediator between parents and teachers when discussing difficult situations. I find it is helpful to make a statement up front that we are all there to help the child, and outline our main goals for the conversation right away. This helps clear up any preconceived concerns that the parents may have come in with. Especially when you schedule a conference due to behavior, I’ve had a lot of parents come in concerned that they are getting “kicked out” of the program, addressing this fear directly can help reroute the tone of the meeting.

Sometimes when I feel a conversation is becoming increasingly challenging I will say, “I need to give this some more thought and get back you”. That way the person feels like I am listening and really considering what they are saying, it gives them time to cool off and it gives me time to come up with a constructive response.

I always keep in mind that we’re on the same team. We’re all trying to find the “best” solution, even though each person has a different definition of that. I listen and encourage, asking questions or giving examples and asking “like this?” To make sure I understand. I say “thank you” for any critique or suggestions, they’re trying to help me. With children, I try to focus on making sure they feel cared about, but if it’s in the moment and they are, say, getting on top of another child, I have to focus on their actions, using distractions and their breathing to help them calm down first.

When it comes to navigating a challenging conversation I make sure to have positive comments to share and not just the negative aspects of the situation. I also make sure that we have the conversation in a private setting so that others around us to do not hear what we are discussing. I will only have the conversation with the people are needing to present and will let the parent know if I need to bring in my supervisor to participate.

I am now experiencing difficulties in my relationship with a new teacher in the same class. After reading this strategy, I will try to start by acknowledging her actions that are being done and the positive behaviors instead of focusing on her negative behaviors.

While navigating tough conversations with parents, I tend to be as friendly as possible, and listen with empathy in mind. With children, I tend to get on their level, and again, talk and listen with empathy in mind. I do like to remember that we are a team, working towards what is best for the child, so finding the best way to talk things out is my goal.

If I see that the situation is getting heated during a conversation, I try not to raise my voice, keep a soft tone and lead to the conclusion that everyone can have their own opinion.

Before I speak, I read the non-verbal energy of the person. For example, for a parent, I first start with something positive about the child’s day before I talk about any negative behavior of the day. It is also good to add one more positive thing the child has done to make the parent and child feel good about their day of learning.

I always make sure to put myself in a position where the conversation can be as private as possible or set up a time to have a chat about the child when we can communicate in a space where everyone feels comfortable.

Whether I am talking to a parent, child or coworker, I need to remain calm and spend as much time listening as talking. I also need to be confident but empathetic.
