MemberJuly 23, 2024 at 11:07 pmWhen I feel compassion fatigue, I first identify what is happening in my own mind/ body. Then I identify where/ how I am feeling that way. Then I address the situation, whether that be taking turns with coworkers when dealing with specific situations or visiting my therapist to see how things may be triggering something from my past. After I address the situation, I try to find solutions to minimize those types of feelings.

I take a step back and evaluate why I may be feeling the way I am. I communicate and ask for help if needed, perhaps take a short break to realign myself and get back on track. Self care needs to be constant and preventative so this feeling does not arise.

MemberJuly 30, 2024 at 7:33 pmWhen feeling compassion fatigue as an early childhood learning provider, it’s essential to manage stress and maintain well-being through several strategies. Taking regular breaks throughout the day to rest and recharge can significantly help, allowing time for relaxing activities like deep breathing or stretching. Setting clear boundaries between work and personal life is crucial to prevent work-related stress from overwhelming your personal time. Engaging in physical activity, such as walking, yoga, or any exercise you enjoy, can reduce stress levels. I personally enjoy going home and singing/playing my instruments, or going on runs or walks. I frequently also go rock climbing (something about jumping down after completing something hard makes it work well for stress relief). Seeking support from colleagues, friends, or mental health professionals to talk about your feelings can also provide relief and perspective. Additionally, practicing mindfulness or meditation can help you stay grounded and manage stress more effectively.

When I feel tired I take breaks when I can talk to coworkers and ask for help when needed and find ways for time to go by fast and to not think much and get things done so when the next day arrives I have less work on myself

MemberAugust 5, 2024 at 6:06 pmCompassion fatigue is common in healthcare, social service, teaching, and childcare fields. It’s important to be mindful of this common situation. In hope of mitigating this, we should practice self care, set healthy boundaries, have mental health support (like a therapist), maintain our professional development like training and workshops that help with stress management, practice mindfulness and relaxation like yoga or meditation, and reflect and highlight the positives like using a gratitude journal.

I usually talk to a colleague about it or go out for a hike or move in some way…that always helps me to gain a better perspective.
