Daily schedule for children?

A big thing I have noticed is the schedule changes with the weather. Sunny days make it so outside play or outside snack is an option but winter times it can be too cold to stay outside for very long, so the schedule is very different. Keeping up to date schedules based on the weather so all staff knows what to follow depending on the day is very important for a successfully run classroom.

Have the children help make the schedule and include a good amount of activities like arts and crafts, reading, and playing inside and out.

Build the schedule around basic needs (when children need to eat, when they need to potty, rest time), take into consideration the safest or best times to go outside during the day, ensure focused and teacher-led activities are balanced with student-led activities, build in music and movement throughout the day.

When making a daily schedule, it should be as constant as possible for everyday. This will help the children to transition easily to the next activity. Things should be broken up into small chucks of time, and easy to manage.

With making a schedule I plan in the meals first, as I cannot control when the food arrives. Then I schedule the lesson circle time, music and movement, recess, small groups, circle time class meeting, etc. I discuss it with my fellow teachers and students for feedback on the chunks of time, if the transitions look strong and fluid enough for the students. I try to keep up with the same routine daily, but then have areas built in to help with adjustments if needed. Like small groups, table top toys, could also be the same time a lesson is taught to small groups of students at a time if circle time did not work the best that day to convey the message!

A schedule should work around meal and nap times and allow for the children to have plenty of independent and collaborative work time, as well as time for outside play. There should be a presence of both teacher-led activities and student-led activities.

Involve the children, do what they like to do while having authority over what happens, having time for rest and lunch as well.

Daily schedules should include in and out door activities. There needs to be room for meal times and quite times. Schedules should be made in order to fit the needs of the age group.

Be consistent, and don’t overwhelm them. Don’t put pressure on them. Make it fun and they will learn to appreciate and enjoy it.

By setting regular times for meals, naps, playtime, and transitions, our little ones will know what to expect each day. I like to do carpet time at the end of the day to get their wiggles out, sing some songs, and read books with them as well.

In creating and maintaining a daily schedule for children, it should keep them interesting. There should be little activities for them to do, and switched up for them to keep intrigued.

I like to begin with scheduled breakfast, lunch, and dinner times. From here I like to pencil in the times that are work hours, recess, and sleep hours. I will be working in a Montessori classroom so our schedule for the school day may look different from a typical school schedule as the children will have a 3 hour work periodI like to begin with scheduled breakfast, lunch, and dinner times. Some tips I have for creating and maintaining a daily schedule for children are consistency, including both structures and unstructured activities, and include transition times.

Do you have any tips or advice on creating and maintaining a daily schedule for children?

I think a good way to maintain a daily schedule is to get the children involved in the schedule and make sure they are aware of what the daily routine is. Then the children will be able to predict what kind of activity is next. I think when creating a schedule you should also try to make sure the children will be engaged in the lessons and be aware that younger children will need breaks in between work/activities.
