Something i have used to assess and control behavior and emotion is feelings pockets. The pockets include happy, sad, frustrated, mad, and scared. Each child has a popsicle stick with there name on it and i can tell them in the moment that if they would like to move there popsicle stick then they certainly can.

when you notice a childs emotions are running away from them give them time to calm down with you there to support them. then once the feel calmer talk to the about what happened and show them what they can do next time the feel big emotions surge inside them. remembering to do this constantly will go a long way in helping children pick this up on their own.

There are usually reasons as to why they are letting out their emotions and we typically tell the child that it is okay to feel that way and once they are calm we talk to them about it. We also use the pinwheel and flower thing to help them calm down, they blow on the pinwheel and sniff the flower. The children really love this.

Best ways to help children with their emotions is to let them express how they are feeling and describe what is making them upset/ what is bothering them so they can express themselves and communicate what is wrong to find a solution.

Allow them to freely express their emotions without interrupting them. Coming down to their level helps them navigate through their emotions and makes them feel heard and cared about.

I love teaching the children sign language words for emotions. This can be really helpful when the emotions they’re having are too big to verbalize. I also help them practice deep breathing, which helps them calm down so we can talk about their emotions.

Practice self-calming with children by role-playing scenarios of frustration or anxiety in a calm setting. Spend a few minutes each day demonstrating and practicing calming techniques in the designated calming space. Consistent practice helps children identify and control their emotions effectively.

One way to help children recognize their emotions and control their responses<strong style=”font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; color: var(–bb-body-text-color);”> is by creating a supportive environment. Encourage open communication, use simple language to label emotions, and provide tools. Also, modeling appropriate emotional responses and being patient. Consistency is essential in guiding children to develop emotional awareness and self-control.

What are some of the best ways to help children recognize their emotions and control their responses?

When the child is calm, show them different emotions and what you would expect in that emotion, emotionally, physically. This will help the child get familiar with different emotions and it will make it easier to differentiate them. Then you teach them different techniques for them, such as deep breathing, etc.
