-
Great points, Kimberley! Encouraging expression through discussion, literature, and activities fosters emotional awareness and regulation in children.
-

Teaching kids about identifying emotions and using regulation strategies while they are well regulated helps set the stage for them to learn to use these skills while they are disregulated. Having visual supports and manipulatives can help children learn and remember these important skills.
-
Great insights, Lucas! Visual supports and manipulatives are excellent tools for reinforcing emotional recognition and regulation strategies.

-
Great suggestions, Jennilee! Utilizing feeling charts and body checks are effective strategies for emotional recognition and regulation.

MemberNovember 7, 2025 at 4:35 amHelping children trust their bodies by letting them make their own decisions as far as safety permits is a good starting point. Describing how a body is communicating feelings (clenched fists; open arms; wiggling) helps children identify the emotions they are experiencing.

I help children recognize and manage their emotions by naming them, validating them, modeling self-control, teaching calming strategies, using books or games, and praising their efforts.
-
Great approach, Luz! Naming emotions and using books are effective strategies for fostering emotional awareness and self-regulation. Keep it up!

Using tools like feeling charts, mirrors, or emotions books can help them name what they’re feeling.

MemberNovember 15, 2025 at 6:56 pmI think practicing emotions recognition when children are calm is a helpful way to teach, as children cannot learn when they are emotionally upset. We use songs like “If You’re Happy and You Know It” and act out different feelings with our face and body language. We use puppets to show how different interactions with peers and teachers make us feel. We read books and talk about the conflicts in the story and notice how the characters are feeling.

Remi
MemberNovember 18, 2025 at 2:44 amIt is helpful to teach children about their emotions and emotional regulation during times that they are regulated. Children can practice identifying feelings from visuals with feelings faces and labeling emotions. Pointing out how the child may be feeling based on their body language can also be helpful. Practicing deep breathing and different ways to take a break is also important.
-
Great insights, Remi! Teaching emotional awareness and regulation through visuals and body language fosters essential coping skills in children.
-
-
Co-regulation. Modeling how you want a child to respond when they are feeling angry or tense. Teach them the steps to self-calm and recognize where there emotions are felt on their body. Describing this to the child may help them to learn how to recognize it.
-
Great insights, Caitlin! Co-regulation and modeling are essential for teaching children emotional recognition and self-calming strategies.
