Create activity stations that allow for movement like dancing, jumping, or balancing. Use music, games, and props (like scarves or bean bags) to make movement fun and engaging. Most importantly, join in and model enthusiasm, kids are more likely to participate when adults are actively involved and having fun too!

There are so many different ways to help the children to get active, when we are outside, we will walk along the fence holding on to it pretending that the grass is hot lava or there is an earthquake, and we all start to yelling. We love going for walks around the building and looking at everything and talking what we are seeing. Inside we have the steppingstones the children really enjoy walking around on those, we dance to music with color scarves.

Having a clean and clear classroom so it’s walkable and toys that utilizes gross motor skills. Also conducting activities that promote physical activity like dancing.

We can encourage mild stretching exercise and deep breathing practices and some yoga in the classroom. We can play some fun songs for them to dance.

I use music and simple games like jumping or dancing to make movement fun. I choose activities that match the children’s age so they stay safe. I also give them time every day to move and play.

Letting children help and be part of the daily schedule and regular activities is a great way to keep them interested and have fun. We have the daily jobs in the classroom and we rotate them so everyone has a chance to try. One counts the people in the room, one open and hold the door when we go outside time, one sets the table, one is the helper when we serve food, etc.

Incorporate movement into learning, like adding dances. Never discipline for being active when appropriate. Have active toys available, such as balls and hula hoops. Try doing kid stretches or yoga.

I have a list of movement songs like stand up sit down by Patty Shukla, Elephants have wrinkles, The Goldfish by Laurie Berkner and We are the Dinosaurs also by Laurie Berkner to highlight a few. I’ve done dance parties. I also just have children reach the sky, touch their toes, reach the sky, touch their toes.
