Creating a developmentally appropriate, fun, and physically active classroom involves incorporating movement and physical activity into daily routines and lessons, while keeping children’s age and abilities in mind.

Plan hands on experience in teaching to help children learn important skills. Spending time outside, singing songs, dancing, reading, coloring, and painting are all fun ways to create a developmentally appropriately active classroom.

Two tips I have are demonstrating how to be fun and active so children can model after your behavior and acknowledging positive behavior from children so they know they are doing a good job.

When working with infants it can be singing songs and manipulating movements to encourage body movements like rolling

Some things you can do to foster a physically active classroom is having dance parties, using songs to encourage movement, having scheduled outside play, and encourage children to clean up after themselves. For the older kids there can be assigned classroom jobs that they can help with. Even with my toddlers, after snack I have them help me clean the table.

Having stretch breaks imbedded into the time that children are playing, encouraging physically active games like simon says for older children or head shoulders knees and toes for the younger children. Having children do games like that throughout the day makes physical activity feel fun.

Plan activities that support physical, social, emotional, and cognitive development, meeting children where they are individually; offer a variety of materials and movement options so children can explore and choose based on their interests and abilities; use music, dance, yoga, obstacle courses, and outdoor play to keep children physically engaged and to support motor development; design hands-on, sensory-rich activities that encourage exploration and creativity while supporting learning goals; alternate between high-energy activities and quieter moments to help children self-regulate; arrange the space with open areas for movement, cozy spaces for rest, and accessible materials to encourage independent activity; plan group games and partner activities that build social skills while keeping children physically active

One fun way to include activity into the daily classroom routine is to use music and dance. Every day do a mini dance party at some point throughout the day.
