Physically Active Classroom
-
Encouraging children to get up and move or dance between activities can help them get rid of some of their extra energy. Ensuring there is open space where children can move and play freely when appropriate is essential. It can also be helpful for some of the activities in the daily schedule to require movement or exercise.
-
Great suggestions, Megan! Incorporating movement and open spaces fosters engagement and supports children’s physical development effectively.

MemberJuly 20, 2025 at 7:17 pmI have an oddly specific activity that I did when I was younger during rainy days we would watch GoNoodle However If You are leaning boards not using screens or technology we also had a classroom store where we would once a month sell our snacks or fun items like we did slime and other things we would get our “money” For positive behavior such as helping clean picking up toys or messes and other good behaviours. This usually wouldn’t work for preschool ages or younger.
-
Great ideas, Josie! Incorporating movement with GoNoodle and a classroom store promotes engagement and positive behavior. Keep sharing!

At the conclusion of the day, assigning tasks to students across the classroom could provide them with a physical activity that also helps them take care of their surroundings.
-
Great suggestions, Salwa! Incorporating songs and classroom tasks effectively promotes movement while fostering responsibility. Keep it up!

MemberJuly 25, 2025 at 9:05 pmThere are a variety of effective strategies to help children remain physically active and reduce sedentary behavior. Federal and state agencies provide valuable resources to support the planning of developmentally appropriate physical activities. Platforms such as YouTube offer visual examples to promote active play, while programs like Playworks provide age-appropriate games and activities designed to engage children in movement. These and other resources can assist child care centers in developing lesson plans and daily schedules that meet the recommended 60 minutes of structured and 60 minutes of unstructured physical activity each day.
-
Great insights, Anne! Utilizing diverse resources like Playworks and YouTube can truly enhance active learning experiences in the classroom.

Creating a developmentally appropriate, fun, and physically active classroom involves designing a space that encourages safe movement, exploration, and play. Incorporating activities like dancing, obstacle courses, and movement games helps children build gross motor skills while having fun. Teachers can make learning more engaging by combining academics with physical activity—for example, hopping while counting or clapping syllables. Including regular outdoor time allows children to run, climb, and explore, which supports both physical health and curiosity. Most importantly, teachers should model enthusiasm, encourage participation without focusing on competition, and allow children to choose how they move. This approach promotes confidence, creativity, and a love for being active.
-
Great insights, Saleemah! Your emphasis on safe movement and creative integration of academics is inspiring. Keep fostering that enthusiasm!

Tips to create a developmentally appropriate, fun, and physically active classroom would be have an engaging and safe environment and turn movement into learning by playing games like letter hopping and support all types of movement.
-
we put songs in which the children do as they say for example when the song says jump they all jump.
-
Great idea, Lenianka! Incorporating music and movement makes learning fun and engaging for young children.

Do you have any tips for creating a developmentally appropriate, fun, and physically active classroom?I could incorporate dance parties into the day, I find listening to music and dancing is so joyful that kids may not even notice they are working out. Also nature walks with scavenger hunts.

Great ideas, Anya! Dance parties and nature walks not only promote physical activity but also enhance joy and engagement in learning.
