A good partnership begins with a strong foundation. Being open and friendly with families on every interaction helps build trust. Providing positive feedback and asking for their opinions ensures you center their expertise. Maintaining professionalism allows for difficult conversation and appropriate resolution.

To create and maintain a good partnership between caregivers/parents and childcare providers, prioritize open and consistent communication, respect and validate parents’ input, maintain confidentiality, and demonstrate reliability by keeping commitments. Actively involve parents in their child’s learning process and celebrate each child’s unique strengths and progress together. This fosters trust, mutual respect, and a supportive environment for the child’s development.

For me to have a good partnership with the parents and child providers is to be honest and always tell the truth and if their is a problem to be honest and to find a way to solve the problem and be open with the parent and the provider and answer or complete their answers they have.

Keep an open line of communication while still setting healthy boundaries. Be sure to ask lots of questions first, listen, then come up with ideas to solve problems or create pathways together.

Like any constructive conversation, it’s important to have established trust in advance. That said, regularly connecting with the parents is super important. When having a hard conversation, I typically start by requesting uninterrupted time with the parent to ensure we are both engaged and ready to discuss. From there, I will use a positive-constructive-positive method; I start with things that are going really well, things I appreciate, etc. Then, I will address the constructive pieces needed. And finally, I will ensure I leave on the highest note possible (this is something we can definitely work through, etc.).

    1. Keep Communication Open Regular updates help build trust.

    2. Personalize Care: Focus on each child’s unique needs.

    3. Involve Parents: Encourage their participation and feedback.

    4. Show Respect: Understand and value their perspectives.

I try to come at parents or caregivers with a friendly team approach. I hope they will come to me and open up if there are issues at home. Communication is key!

A tip to create and maintain a good relationship with the families is: Provide high quality care, treat them with respect, do not judge the families, be welcome in the classroom, maintain a healthy family/ teacher relationship for the child, but above all generate possible solutions and invite them to share something about their culture.

Be patient and understanding of the parents situation. When speaking to them make sure you are being respectful and not making them feel misunderstood or blame them for anything. Talk about any problems and try to find a solution that you both are comfortable with while also respecting their beliefs and culture.

Advice for creating and maintaining a good partnership between caregivers/parents and childcare providers is to define any problems, come up with possible solutions, agree on the best solution for all parties, try it out and if it doesn’t work rinse and repeat.
