I think its good to have reminders of guidance policies is always a good idea, I think that it is a reminder for teachers and caregivers of how they should behave and to show parents of the policies that are in place

Yes, policy can be referred to in Team meetings when discussing a child. As a new hire, the Teacher will be clear upon the expectations of child/teacher interaction.

Heather, great point about using policies in team meetings to clarify expectations for child-teacher interaction.

Some situations where I think written guidelines would be helpful for childcare programs are grey area situations where a child is upset and if not moved – which they usually do not want to do themselves – may hurt themselves or other children.

Yes, I think these written policies allow for consistent reminders so teachers are prepared. In the event of emergency or accidents, these can be especially helpful.

In addition to the comments from other people on this course I think written policies will be helpful when communicating with parents about their child, a situation in the day care etc, or when training staff or giving feedback to a staff member regarding their interactions with the child.

I think there are a multitude of situations where protocol is useful. Any injuries, medical emergencies, evacuations, fires, or physical altercations are uncommon and could use the guidance of professional advisement.

They will be useful for emergency situations. Most parents worry about what we have to do during an emergency situation, so having everything written down can help the parents understand what we do.

I think childcare programs written guidance policies are useful in situations where clear expectations for behavior are needed, when addressing conflicts between children or staff, and to ensure consistency in enforcing rules and regulations. They also help guide responses to challenging behaviors and provide a framework for communication with parents.

Having your program policy stated can create a clear expectation of what to do in an emergency, natural disaster, responding to bad behavior, etc. that puts everyone on the same page, commitment and expectation when caring for the children. It also helps clear up any misconceptions, behaviors or etc. one may personally have toward a situation due to life experiences.
