I think anytime someone new is coming into the program, either teacher or family, having written guidelines helps set the tone and allows everyone a chance to understand the center’s expectations.

Of course, especially in times of stress like emergencies or sudden severe illnesses, it’s a great thing to have to reference to know exactly what to do.

What a guidance policy might have on it: in the event a child is extremely acting out; is because mom and dad and anyone in the care circle can see clearly what your course of action will be beneficial and how and why you believe what you do: and they will know it well in advance.

When emergencies arise that put children or childcare providers at risk, it is important to have pre-existing guidance policies.

When children continue dangerous behaviors like hitting or biting, and parents are spoken to, having written guidelines would be important to reference for parents. Children who continue dangerous behaviors should be sent home if measures taking in the childcare setting cannot help them to make safe choices. If parents are upset about this, having a written and publicly-posted policy about aggression or other behaviors would be helpful to show them, and allow them to perhaps connect with the child and discuss the behaviors at home.

There are so many situations where an entire program should be on one page. How is discipline handled, how are meal times handled. Does the program do the no thank you bite? Does the program restrict foods like ketchup and nacho cheese that aren’t even part of the CACFP? Or can children have unlimited servings of them? Are children allowed to cry? I worked at a place in Idaho where once a baby turned 12 months they were screamed at and told they weren’t allowed to cry.

incident and illness as well as emergency preparedness guidelines will be useful for the program and for keeping the children safe, generally if there is something in the guidebook, it is meant to keep children safe
