Written guidelines can be useful in childcare programs when it comes to how to follow emergency procedures, medication, where to evacuate to, menus in the program, and how to respond to unsafe behavior. These are important because having all the staff on the same page builds a sense of stability for the children.

Yes, written guidance policies in childcare programs help to standardize expectations of services given to children which are incredibly helpful! A scenario I think of is responding to an emotional escalation of a child and what is not tolerated on how to respond and what is encouraged.

Yes, written guidelines that clearly define the expectations, responses, and procedures help all stakeholders be on the same page. These ensure that everyone involved in the children’s caregiving know what to do. It is important to define not only day to day interactions and communications, but also emergency and less often occurring situations, such as serious injury, where the guidelines might not be top of mind or emotions are running high and it is easy to overlook something.
