The WACs acknowledge the importance of diversity to a child’s healthy development. They direct early learning professionals to create warm and welcoming classrooms. The support the use of materials and activities that include diverse images and celebrate the cultural differences between children and their families.

</font></font>

Good communication is key. Remember that communication is more than words. Facial expressions, body language, and intonation are all important elements of communication. These elements are important for understanding and positive interactions.

I would welcome a child into my classroom and have the child fill out some kind of “about me” page that would allow them to share certain information with the class and maybe ask if they can bring in a thing or two that means a lot to them or is something dear to them (could be a cultural item that they would like to share with the class so we could better understand their culture). I would also have the rest of the children participate and introduce themselves and share at least one thing with the class that is special to them and means a lot to them or their culture or family.

WACs remarks on the importance of inclusion. It is vital for children coming from diverse background to feel comfortable and welcome in their new environment. Teachers and aides have the responsibility to make these children and families to feel at ease as much as possible. By making the children feel a sense of familiarity in the daily activities and class curriculum, wether that is through music in their native language, a book about their country or culture, dolls that represent their identity, etc.

    1. 100-300-0160 is about inclusion and equity in care, and addresses how one should include families, no matter what their background is.

    2. The big message is that childcare centers should make an effort to include and collaborate with everyone, and educate children of the diversity in their classroom and in the world.

WAC 110-300-160 indicates that an early learning provider must provide culturally and racially diverse learning opportunities and must demonstrate those activities. The activities may be equipped with materials such as diverse dolls, picture, games, and music in diverse language from different ethnic groups. It is also the providers responsibility to stop any kind of discriminating behavior or comments in the classroom (and in general)

The big message is that diversity and inclusion is crucial in childcare and that everybody should be treated equally and it is important to teach that equality.

Q1. There are several policies put in place regarding diversity and family collaboration. To list a few, There are:

    1. WAC 110-300-0160 Promoting acceptance of diversity.

    2. WAC 110-300-0085 Family partnerships and communication.

    3. WAC 110-300-0030 Nondiscrimination.

    4. WAC 110-300-0065 School readiness and family engagement activities.

    5. WAC 110-300-0080 Family support self-assessment.

Q2: What big messages do the WACs give regarding diversity and collaboration?

By combining the premises of each of the WACs above, we as childcare and early education providers have a duty to create a welcoming space for all types of children and all types of families. We must present, believe in, and encourage the growth of a community that is educational and lovingly accepting at its base; one where every child is learning about one another and what makes them special, and what makes them unique, and one where every child and their family feels validated and taken seriously and with integrity, wherever it may be that they are in their lives. We must provide a program that meets every child and every family where they are at, and make sure they are given the provisions that they need so that they can grow to be their very best.

Both WAC 110-300-0160 and WAC 110-300-0320 discuss diversity and collaboration in the classroom and with families. Primarily, the importance of providing culturally and racially diverse learning is encouraged through use of classroom materials and books. Encouraging diversity also includes stepping in and redirecting or stopping biased behavior from both children and adults. These actions encourage and facilitate an understanding of diversity as well as promote collaboration between different cultural and racial groups.

We should welcome each and every child .We should respect and value all families equally because they have their own individual identity . Communication with families is very important for their child development goals. Its very important to gain there trust because we can obtain the information from each child’s family about family beliefs, culture, language,<font color=”rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)” face=”inherit”>health issues, special needs and other area of development .These information will help in understanding the child and child’s progress and development.Communication with parents may be in form of email ,letter ,messages or in person.Support each child sense of self and engage in the acceptance of difference and </font>similarities<font color=”rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)” face=”inherit”> of people. 1. WAC 110-300-0160.

    2. An early learning provider must provide culturally and
racially diverse learning opportunities. Diversity is a positive thing that should be taught to the children so that they may be less biased based on cultural differences.

WACs 110-300-0080 and 110-300-0085 address diversity and collaboration among families.

A main message is to discover and value the family’s diverse culture and primary role to teach/raise their child. ELCs should seek to collaborate with the family.

    I found these two WACs as an example;

    1. WAC 170-295-2040
    You must:
    (2) Guide the child’s behavior based on an
understanding of the individual child’s needs
    and stage of development

    2. WAC 110-300-0330
    (1) An early learning provider must work to
maintain positive relationships with children by
using consistent guidance techniques to help
children learn. Guidance techniques must adapt an
    early learning program’s environment, routines,
and activities to a child’s strengths, developmental
level, abilities, culture, community, and relate to the
    child’s behavior.

Both of these WACs are pretty broad, but they tell us to teach with the individual child in mind, we need to make sure we are catering to every single child that walks into our care.
