Ask questions, listen, show through eye contact and interaction you are interested in what they have to say. Be positive and encouraging.

There are numerous creative and interactive strategies to engage children in active, meaningful learning. Here are some ideas:

    1. Hands-On Learning: Encourage hands-on exploration and experimentations.

    2. Dramatic Play: Provide opportunities for dramatic play, such as dress-up, role-playing, and pretend scenarios.

    3. Outdoor Exploration

    4. Storytelling and Literacy: Engage children in storytelling, read-alouds, and writing activities to spark their imagination.

    5. Project-Based Learning

    6. Music and movement

    7. STEM Activities: Introduce activities related to science, technology, engineering, and math, such as experiments.

    8. Inquiry-Based Learning: Encourage children to ask questions.

    9. Artistic Expression

    10. Collaborative Games and Puzzles

    • Foster positive self-identity and a sense of emotional well-being through having all cultures represented in toys/dolls and by sharing different food as well.

    • Develop social skills and knowledge through activities, waiting for turns, using manners, and so on.

    • Enhance physical development and skills by offering age/developmentally appropriate equipment to play on outside – movement is important!

    • Encourage and demonstrate sound health, safety, and nutritional practice by offering wholesome snacks and meals, having emergency procedures in place, as well as a well-stocked first aid kit, and following all health/safety protocols.

    • Encourage creative expression, representation, and appreciation for the arts by offering several different types of mediums, crafts, and opportunities to celebrate different cultures/holidays.

    • Develop a sense of belonging to the natural environment by enjoying walks or playtime outside.

    • Respect and celebrate cultural diversity by having the space, toys, books, food, and more reflect your group of children. Bring in family members to share in their culture and holidays too!

Make lessons fun and relatable, allowing them to expand their creativity in the activities targeted towards the lesson, and talk to them individually about how they feel about the lesson at hand and the approaches they’re taking towards it and encourage them and celebrate their learnings.

What are some creative ways to get children engaged in active, meaningful learning?

    – To begin teachers should ask questions to the students to ge to know them a lot better and see what they like and what they are interested in for example if some kids like to paint and others like butterflies we can paint butterflies so both likings are taken into consideration.

Use stories to introduce new concepts and ideas, inviting children to participate by acting out roles or creating their own endings.Encourage drawing, painting, sculpture, and other forms of artistic expression as a way to communicate ideas and feelings.

Every child has their own interests so not every activity that childcare providers may plan will interest every child. Providing multiple activities that suit multiple children’s interest would be the most beneficial. During circle time the provider could include different things to peak interests in the kids and throughout the day doing multiple different activities. Learning the different child’s interests can help when deciding what activities to include.

ValRhee makes a great point about catering to individual interests and providing varied activities to engage all children effectively.

A great way to get them engaged and excited is to integrate things they enjoy as well as small things they mention in passing. A great example of this is a Friday treat activity that my class has done and we go over the senses and simple measurements before enjoying a small treat together.

Some creative ways to get children engaged in active, meaningful learning are positive self-identity, develop social skills, develop a sense of belonging, encourage the kids to think critically, reason, question and experiment.

Engaging children in questions that require real responses. Try to get the child to tell you what they do know. Sometimes it is okay to lead children slightly to the answer by hinting, this can boost confidence when they (inevitably) get it correct!

When any activity is present, I plan to engage with them by asking what they’re creating and affirming their efforts with positive feedback. And to continuously interact with them, asking simple questions that allow them to share their process with you.

    1. First to show children something interesting for them (ex. simple origami), then do it together, then they do the project with teacher’s help, then helping each other. In that case there is possibility to develop art and social skills.
