Start by having them ask questions first, then wonder about those questions together.

Incorporate hands-on activities such as sensory bins, art projects, and science experiments to make learning tangible. Encourage storytelling and role-playing to foster imagination and language skills. Outdoor exploration through nature walks, gardening, and scavenger hunts can make learning about the environment fun. Use music and movement activities like songs, dance, and rhythm exercises to teach concepts like counting, patterns, and coordination. Finally, interactive games that involve problem-solving and teamwork can make learning engaging and collaborative.

Encourage them to explore the materials and ask questions if they are hesitant to engage in an activity that may have new or sensory components.

MemberAugust 1, 2024 at 5:49 pmKeeping kiddos engaged in active learning can be hard. At times, it can feel like we are putting on a ‘show’. I have found the best way to keep kiddos engaged in learning something new is through songs with associated actions. For example, we sing the days of the week every day while looking at our calendar and pointing to each day. Then at the end, I will engage a child to point to yesterday and say the name of the day. Then, we will look at today, and do the same.

Whenever it is possible, let students research interests. Through choice, teachers may cultivate students’ independence and curiosity. Entertain them with imaginative exercises and simulations to help them understand complex concepts more easily. -

MemberAugust 7, 2024 at 12:00 amAsking the children meaningful questions about what they are doing helps to engage them in meaningful learning. The questions can get them to think more deeply about what they are doing. Avoid questions that can easily answered with a simple yes or no.

MemberAugust 7, 2024 at 4:23 pmDevelop a learning environment with specific areas and materials where children can practice their skills and learn while playing in those areas, display the materials at a level appropriate and enjoyable for children, have enough materials for each child where they can use their imagination. Design the dramatic play area with real materials where children can dramatize aspects of real life.

Great suggestions, Diana! Providing specific areas and materials for play and learning can engage children in meaningful activities.

MemberAugust 8, 2024 at 3:02 pmOne way to engage students in a more meaningful way is by basing the curriculum on their emerging interests. Instead of sticking to a set lesson plan every year, find ways to incorporate the necessary skills (ie. STEM, creative arts, motor skills) while using topics they are interested in to keep them engaged. Examples include:
– Math skills by counting toy cars
– Science lessons on space
– Creating an obstacle course with animal-themed actions
-
Ryley, great suggestion! Tailoring learning to students’ interests can make lessons more engaging and relevant. Good examples provided.

some creative ways to get the children engaged is to, play learning games with them and help them learn more about the learning games or playing fun and engaging activities with them outside or at the park.

MemberAugust 10, 2024 at 5:33 pmKeying into the kinds of interests kids have can help provide clues as to what sorts of learning they may benefit from.
Open ended questions.
A variety of resources or choices.
Inviting them, personally, to join.
Varying group size across activities so that children who prefer large, and small groups are accomodated.
-
Ask children open-ended questions and display a variety of expressions to their responses.
