Providing painting activities on unexpected materials (not flat paper- perhaps on leaves or rocks or origami objects) and asking them to share what surprised them about it.

I think some good ways to get children engaged is obviously through play. I think games geared towards the subject at hand or sensory tables filled with sensory items that have to do with the lesson being taught can be really helpful. likewise, circle time where you’re reading books and singing songs helps kiddos get engaged!

MemberJuly 14, 2024 at 5:35 pmTo get children engaged in active, meaningful learning, try using hands-on activities like crafts and science experiments that let them touch and explore. Encourage storytelling and role play, where children can act out stories or make up their own, helping their imagination and language skills grow. Take learning outside with nature walks, gardening, or scavenger hunts to connect with the world around them. Use games and puzzles to make learning fun and develop problem-solving skills. Interactive technology like educational apps can make learning exciting and dynamic. Also, can have children work on group projects to build teamwork and social skills.

Getting children engaged in active, meaningful learning by learning about who they are and where they come from. By finding out what they are interested in and letting that influence how/ what you teach them.
-
Use some universal every day items for example a spoon and let the children show you what they can do with that object. Make a drum on the ground with it, put it on their nose, or balance it in their hand or hand to their classmate or you get the idea.

Storytelling and Dramatic Play: Encourage children to express themselves through storytelling and dramatic play. This can involve puppets, costumes, or even just their imaginations.
Outdoor Exploration: Nature provides endless opportunities for learning. Whether it’s a nature walk, a gardening project, or simply observing the weather, outdoor exploration can stimulate curiosity and foster a love of learning.
Games and Puzzles: Games and puzzles can be both fun and educational. They can help children develop problem-solving skills, learn to work as a team, and understand complex concepts.
Music and Movement: Music and movement activities can help children develop motor skills, learn about rhythm and patterns, and express themselves creatively.

Having knowledge in the developmental range of your age group. Knowing the interests of the children in your group. Providing an environment with tools/materials that allow/encourage children to explore in different activities in small groups.

-Thinking of a daily question to ask each student each day. It could go along with curriculum or it could just be a fun question to get there brains engaged while learning.
-Have a child bring in a picture or “show and tell” item to share with the class once a week
-Bring the children on a nature walk to collect 1 item to bring back to class to share with everyone what it is, where they found it, etc.
-
Brooke, great suggestions! Daily questions, show and tell, and nature walks are engaging and meaningful for kids.

By first observing, we can see what interests a child and from there we can build individual activities to engage and provoke curiosity. For example if a child is interested in paints, we can structure a painting activity, asking meaningful questions about what they are making or why they chose the materials they did. Following their interests, we can uplift their development and guide them towards more meaningful interactions with the world.
-
Elizabeth, your approach of observing and building individual activities based on children’s interests is effective for meaningful engagement. Great insight!

MemberJuly 26, 2024 at 9:14 pmTo engage children in active, meaningful learning, try incorporating hands-on activities that relate to their interests. Use interactive and sensory materials like sand, water, or clay to explore concepts. Incorporate storytelling and role-playing to make learning come alive. Create projects that allow for creativity, such as building models or drawing. Additionally, encourage exploration through outdoor activities and field trips to provide real-world connections. Engaging children in discussions and asking open-ended questions can also deepen their understanding and involvement.

MemberJuly 28, 2024 at 7:14 pmBy building the relationship with the child, you can find their interests and use them to foster engagement. An example is if a child if really into dinosaurs, you can find books, songs, and arts and crafts activities and ask questions that allow them to engage. Great questions to ask are: What is your favorite dinosaur? Is it a big dinosaur or a little dinosaur? Does it fly or does it stomp? What color is the dinosaur? etc.
-
Delaney’s suggestion of using a child’s interests to foster engagement is impactful and practical for meaningful learning experiences.

For me to get children to be engaged is to have fun activities for the children and try out some activities to see what the children liked and did not like be creative with the activities and pull out some ways that children will listen and engaged use a puppet and show the puppet doing the activitie and maybe that can help some children do the activity that is shown
