Providing a visually rich and safe environment that promotes curiosity and learning is one great way. Being an active participant with children is another. Ask lots of open ended questions that may guide ideas or learning with the materials. It’s also important to take into account the cultural makeup of your classroom to ensure the students can see familiar representations of familiar people , spaces, or things.

I love engaging children in learning about the environment around them, teaching them about the seasons, the life cycle of trees and plants in fun and engaging ways such as songs arts and foraging for crafts supplies like pinecones, leaves, sticks and other fun things.

Great suggestions, Megan! Play, inquiry-based learning, and movement activities are indeed effective ways to engage children in meaningful learning.

I try to find out what the children are interested in and scaffold some learning into the activities they love doing. If I see a group of children building in the block area, I can ask them “whos tower is the tallest?” now we’re using comparing words like tallest, shorter. We can then check out understanding with measuring tape or rulers, and then we are learning about measuring, and comparing numbers- which is larger? Then connecting that the larger number is the tallest. If they’re interested, the kids can draw blueprints of their block towers, see how tall they can make the towers, or learn more about construction and building in the real world. It’s all about expanding and deepening what we see them engaging with.

To make learning fun for kids, let them play and use their hands. Let them build with blocks, paint, or make crafts. Take them outside to look at plants and bugs. Use songs and games to teach numbers and letters while they move. Let them pretend to be different characters in stories.

Yancen, great suggestions! Allowing play, hands-on activities, outdoor exploration, and imagination are indeed effective ways to engage children in learning.

Having a child-like enthusiasm for the world around me keeps my creativity alive. I love to blend our outdoor time with fun interactive games like good old-fashioned Simon Says and Ring-a-Rosies, where we make funny faces with fallen leaves and pine cones, trying to mimic each other’s expressions. When a child is engaged in pretend cooking, I ask them about their dish and the ingredients they’re using. Once I have their full attention, I’ll throw in a fun fact about whether it’s a root or a leafy vegetable! I always try to incorporate something they already know with something new.

Manasi’s use of nature and interactive games fosters engagement and learning through fun and creativity. Great approach!

I think a creative way to get children engaged and involved in active, meaningful learning is to provide options. For example, at one station could be a sandbox with buckets, shovels and different sand castle designs. This would be an activity to engage a child’s imagination and allows them to experience textures and use their building skills. It requires fine motor skills as well. Another station would be a matching game station. Where children could pin the photo to match the word on the board. It stimulates active thinking and challenges them to sound things out. This would be an activity for children a little older, maybe in the 4-5 range. I think a child is easily excited and an area with music instruments, a piano or mini guitar. Maybe a drum set or radio that sings. There are lots of activities to put before them that can be both fun and educational. Meeting them where they are and working around their likes and dislikes is important. If a child loves animals, offer toy giraffes and zebras, open the world to a whole new topic, fish, deer, all of these things the child never knew about. Build on the skills and things a child enjoys and keep the door open to exploration.

MemberOctober 23, 2024 at 1:11 amI think it is important to learn about your class and the individuals in it and plan specific lessons or activities that will appeal to them. If you have a class that really enjoys dramatic play, for example, you can pick a book they really enjoy and have them take turns acting it out.
-
Great insight, Sabrina! Tailoring lessons to children’s interests and strengths is key to engaging learning experiences.

One idea is to keep children engaged in hands on activities, they really love to create, for 3xample kinetic sand or play do. Ask lots of open ended questions develops their imagination and is good for learning vocabulary. They like to explore the nature, this gives us the opportunity to create some lessons outside.
