You could take what the child is interested in and ask questions to make them think and wonder about it more. Like if the child likes to play with blocks, ask if they can build certain things and ask why they built it certain ways/try to teach new ways to build whatever it is.

I think one of the main ways to engage children is by letting them have choice in their activities. That doesn’t have to meet constant free time, but involving them in as much of the process as possible is beneficial to build their independence and ability to make decisions.

In order to keep a child engaged in an activity it can be helpful for you to also be engaged by asking questions or even showing them somting new they can recreate.

I read someones response on if one child likes books and another likes a certian animal, to find books about that animal and I think that is such a creative idea! I will definitely be using moving forward 🙂

• Some creative ways to get children engaged in active, meaningful learning are to ask meaningful questions. So this way the child can practice using their critical thinking and child care providers aren’t just giving close end answers. Asking meaningful questions allows for child development and becomes a learning session, where they can feel open to ask more questions. It’s important to try and turn everything into a learning session when able to. More creative ways are: transitioning from small group discussion to big group, fun team builders, simon says, incorporating their interests, and etc.

Engaging kids in active meaningful learning requires play based learning that supports their curiosities. I want to incorporate story telling into my program, I think it really grabs their attention for example, when reading a book we can act it out or when we are learning about what bears eat I could tell a story about a bear wandering through the forest trying to find food he “likes”. I also love hands on activities, the kids in the program I work at enjoy arts and crafts that I plan and I would love to envolve more learning with it such as sciency things like “do we think this apple will sink or float when I put it in water”
