What are some creative ways to get children engaged in active, meaningful learning?

I found that one of the best ways to get children engaged is by having them repeat key words after me, spell them aloud, or even do a hand motion when saying specific key words.

One way I enjoy creative, meaningful activities with children is by engaging in dramatic play with dolls or by ourselves, and when we experience some sort of “conflict” in our dramatic play, I’ll ask the children questions such as, “what do we do when someone says something that hurts our feeling?” Or, “how can we include our friends and share what we have with them,” or even, “who should we call when someone gets injured?” I get the opportunity to show children how to react to real-life scenarios in a healthy way through dramatic play. I also love engaging in serve-and-return whenever a child shows interest in any toys or materials. I enjoy asking them what they love about these materials and then sharing how they may relate to life outside of the classroom.

To foster active and meaningful learning in children, you can use a variety of creative strategies such as play-based learning, outdoor exploration, and creative projects that allow them to apply what they have learned in a practical way. Encouraging teamwork, using interactive technology, and applying the project-based learning approach are also excellent ways to engage children. In addition, interactive stories, role-playing, challenges, and friendly competitions, as well as making decisions in their own learning, are effective tools to spark their curiosity, creativity, and problem-solving skills.

The practice of intentionally asking meaningful questions aimed at fostering wonder and creativity in the children is an effective way of engaging them in learning. This means asking questions that dont end in “yes or no” but in “how, why, where, when, etc” and gets the children thinking and imagining on their own. Then they have a reason to pay attention!

Fine motors and gross motor activities can be best way to engage kids both indoor and outdoors.

Here are few activities that I used in my class;

Fine motor activities- different sizes and shapes tong activities like Pom-pom picking from cloth pin or tiny pom-pom from tweezers, marble and tong. Different kind of pouring activity like pouring water from 1 jar to another, pour kidney beans , lentils or rice from 1 jar to another or through funnel is also fun. Put a big poster paper on the wall, draw different shapes on that, ask kids to put dot stickers inside the shape or on the line of the shape. There are many more like this, just think out of the box and be creative.

Gross motor activities- Draw big shapes from painters tape. Ask kids to jump inside the triangle or jump beside the circle. Playing with big parachute. Some fun Dancing ang jumping through songs.

I like to perform an activity to entice the child to join me. I ask questions about how to do a certain activity. For example, if I am playing in the kitchen with a child ill ask them “What do you like to cook?” or “Can you make me a yummy treat?”.
