I think it important to know your students and interests and try to involve those in the activity and lesson. In combination with meeting them where they are skills wise, this can lead to engaged learning.

Children learn best when they are actively involved in curious creative voice to engage them is meaningful. Learning includes hands-on activities like our project science experiments or dramatic play giving children choices and connecting lessons to the real life experience. Also keep them outdoors, exploration, music, and storytelling creativity and make learning fun and memorable.

One way could be to use a “serve and return” approach with questions regarding the environment. I recall having an extended conversation about beavers with a 6 year old student at an outdoor program. She wondered if beavers lived in the area of the forest we were in, and instead of of simply saying I didn’t know or I didn’t think so, I answered with questions about what she thought and why, which got a few children and myself talking about what kinds of habitat beavers might need and what kinds of effects they had on the environment around them, which extended to a discussion of other animals. I was able to share what I knew about animals in the environment to the extent that I could answer questions, and we generated a lot of new questions to explore as we organized our knowledge and understandings about the forest.

Creative ways to get children engaged in active, meaningful learning often start from noticing and responding to a child’s interest. In October, the pre-k children started talking about pumpkins. The teacher then read a book about a child treating a squash as her pretend baby and brought in different types of pumpkins and squash to the class. Children had input on what to do with each squash- cook and eat it, see what happens when it sits out over time, play with it. The teacher then brought the children on a field trip to a garden. All of these creative ways to further engage children started from paying attention to their interest and asking meaningful questions.

Offering activities with prompts to inspire play can get children engaged in the activities. Introducing a new material to a small group and then asking questions and talking with the kids can extend the activity further and even inspire ideas for future activities.

I think it’s important to realize that children have different interests, so one child may be interested in art while another does not care much for it. That child may be better served exploring sand or building a puzzle. It’s important to allow children choice in their activities as this avoids power struggles. Additionally, making transitions into games can make children more invested in our behavioral expectations.
