From my perspective in the kitchen, I see how much learning happens when children share meals. They build <strong data-start=”555″ data-end=”572″>social skills by talking with friends, practicing manners, and learning to take turns passing food or cleaning up. I also encourage <strong data-start=”691″ data-end=”712″>critical thinking by asking open-ended questions like, <em data-start=”750″ data-end=”813″>“Why do you think our apples turned brown after we cut them?” or <em data-start=”817″ data-end=”873″>“What happens when we mix these ingredients?” This helps them reason, predict, and make connections between what they see and what they know.Cooking and food-related activities also support <strong data-start=”1022″ data-end=”1061″>physical development and art skills. Stirring, pouring, and using utensils strengthen fine motor coordination, while decorating cookies or arranging colorful fruit turns food into a form of creative expression.It’s amazing how something as simple as preparing or sharing a meal can help children grow in so many areas, socially, physically, and creatively, while encouraging curiosity and confidence at the same time.

Some ways to get children engaged in active meaningful learning is by having activities that give them the opportunity to explore their imagination and connect classroom activities/ideas to everyday life activities so they can be learning all across the board and be able to connect the two. For example, the dramatic play kitchen area in most early learning classrooms, a perfect way to let them explore their imagination while also learning an everyday life skill.

Creating interesting and engaging invitations using developmentally appropriate loose parts is one good way of getting children engaged in active meaningful learning.

The first thing to try is asking questions that are open-ended. This will give you an idea of where the child’s comprehension level is and how you can meet them and engage them more. For example, if you ask “why do leaves fall off trees?”, a child may say “because it’s cold” or “because the wind is blowing”. This is much more engaging than just telling them “leaves fall in autumn when the wind blows them off the trees”.

Always having hands on learning and let the children lead with what they are wanting to learn. If we are talking about trees, but in that moment questions about insects are being asked, feed into their learning to keep them interested and engaged.

When getting kids excited for an activity, I usually start by asking them a question about how something works and have a discussion to garner interest. Then many of these activities are usually messy, sensory focused, use a brand-new small motor technique. When I start these activities, I try to have a lot of energy since I’ve found they match my enthusiasm when I do.
