You can use observations to plan for learning experiences and interactions. Taking time to observe allows you to explore what infants or toddler are focusing on, what their intentions might be, and what strategies they are using to learn.

When done intentionally, observation and documentation is extremely important and helpful in providing the best possible future for that child. Going in prepared with a plan and an idea of things you can look for sets you up for success. Understanding each specific child and the difference in their learning styles helps us as providers to be more selective with the curriculum that we present in our classrooms. Documenting what we see gives us a foundation to build off of and a reference to look back on as the child grows and changes. It is also encouraging for us as caregivers to see the progress a child has made and what techniques worked best to help him meet those goals. If we know that a child is very mechanically inclined but lacks social skills, we can perhaps involve other children in his play so that he is doing something he enjoys and is comfortable with but at the same time being exposed to a new thing.

Observing and documenting a child’s development allows a teacher to better understand where a child is developmentally, so we can plan developmentally appropriate curriculum that meets the child where they are at. It also allows us to observe any milestones that child may be meeting or missing.

Observation and documentation are very important tasks in child development, this can give us an idea on how to help each child individually, helping them to grow in their specific areas of need. Documentation helps us to keep records of each child and also for the parents to know how they are doing in the classroom. Collaboration between teachers and parents is also required to reinforce the child skills.

An instructor must get to know each student to be able to address each students level and placement of growth, which includes observing when completing tasks given to all students, as well as individual time spent with each student to learn where they are as you get to know them. You can pick up on many signs where they may struggle or get frustrated or show disinterest because it may be a difficult task and they may try to avoid it, or even show behaviors of disruption when something is too much for them. Observation and time spent with each will show you how to best help and plan curriculum for each to help them succeed.

Observing and documenting a child’s development help us better understand the child’s placement of milestones. It helps us to be able to better identify any delays a child may have and therefore, assist in providing curriculum that will best fit the child’s needs.

Observations help inform us of where a child is at developmentally and what their interests and strengths are. This can then lead us to building a curriculum that is better suited to them. Targeting their interests, maybe a developmental area that needs more attention, and allow them to show off their strengths and build confidence.

Observing and documenting a child’s development can help early learning providers because it allows them to keep track of the child’s progress, to make sure they are where they are supposed to be for their age. If for some reason a child is behind in their progress, this would allow the provider to be able to report back to the parent if there is a concern.

There are milestones for every age, but each child learns at a different pace. By doing so, the teacher is able to assess each child’s needs so that they can be properly met and continue to grow in their learning. Tracking the child’s development also gives a record of the child’s growth, so that you can set goals and the parents can feel more at ease about their child’s progress.
