Their big message is that diversity (culture, language, ability, family structure, etc.) should be clearly and positively reflected in both the environment and daily practice. One material that can help challenge stereotypes and promote inclusion is a set of realistic picture books showing many different kinds of families in everyday life, so all children can see themselves and others represented.

WAC 110-300-0030 Nondiscrimination. (1) Early learning programs are defined by state law as places of public accommodation that must: (a) Not discriminate in employment practices or client services based on race, creed, color, national origin, sex, honorably discharged veteran or military status, marital status, gender, sexual orientation, age, religion, or ability. For the purposes of this chapter, “sex” means gender and “sexual orientation” means heterosexuality, homosexuality, bisexuality, and gender expression or identity, also referred to as SOGIE, and includes all persons who identify as LGBTQIA+; and (b) Comply with the requirements of the WLAD, chapter 49.60 RCW, and the ADA. (2) An early learning program must have a written nondiscrimination policy addressing at least the factors listed in subsection (1) of this section.

The WAC itself promotes discovery and developing the social skills necessary to approach a child and their family’s diverse background without prior prejudices and explicit biases. It is important that we as childcare professionals continue to have a growth mindset in learning and understanding children and families of different, unique cultural backgrounds.

The WACs state that all early learning programs need to create welcoming environments for the families and always honor cultural differences, and I also feel that providers should offer culturally and racially diverse learning opportunities. That means using curriculum, activities, and materials (books, music, dolls, etc.) that reflect the diversity of children, families, and staff without reinforcing stereotypes.
