Time management is essential in early childhood education, and some of the most effective time-saving strategies come from strong routines and thoughtful preparation. One of the biggest time savers is planning materials and activities in advance and keeping them organized and easily accessible. When transitions are smooth and expectations are clear, children spend less time waiting and more time engaged in learning.

I have my daily schedule in the hallway on a family board, on my teacher cabinet and whiteboard. So wherever I am teaching, I can always have access to it. I just started color coding my activities throughout the day so it also teaches my students what time it is.

My time saving hack is to keep all curriculum together in a bin/file holder where it is easily accessible and portable. This allows it to be easily taken with and restocked on planning. It also makes it easy to delegate setting up activities to whoever is in your room. Then you can tell them to grab the folder of the day and set the activity on the table during circle time.

Something that helps both me and my co-workers is the fact that we use whiteboards with tasks like changing/bathroom time and feeding/bottling in the classroom, having an easy to see time frame for when to next do these tasks for each child and being able to look at the whole picture for the day in order to clearly see what to prioritize.

Prep materials for activities the night before. Group similar tasks together, like cleaning up and setting up for the next activity in one step. Use visual schedules for children so transitions are smoother. Keep a “grab-and-go” snack and supply station for quick access.

I use a meal kit service at home to save time at night amd a top three list each day for at work to ensure I get at least the most important done. My iPad has really helped me with productivity the last two years.

I love delegating clean up tasks to my students. It helps them take ownership in the classroom and fosters a sense of community amongst their classmates. They love getting to help and it allows me to focus on the next activity on our schedule.

I would say making a to-do list on my lunch may be good for me when I get home. I tend to come home and complete small task like starting a load but then get distracted by a show while I’m doing. I forget to do what else needs to be done. So maybe having a set timer or a reminder set for myself may work. Also packing lunches which I never seem to do, I can do at night or get up a few minutes earlier to make so I have something to snack on.A golden moment for me is when I’m at work and having the children help with snack set up or lunch by helping put plates and cups on the table. Not only does help with staying on normal routine but we choose different kiddos every time, so everyone gets a chance to help. Doing this everyday is something I see them enjoy doing as it allows the be more responsible and independent.

It is always best to start the day happy and with a smile on my face. That way I can tackle obstacles and remain calm and as stress free as possible. I would create a follow a routine both at home and at work. I will do my best to stick to the time frames allotted to each activity and ask my assistant teacher to remind me when transitions are approaching so I can be ready for the activity change. I will delegate when needed to catch up on time and adapt an activity accordingly if taking longer so that I do not get rushed in what I am doing and create a potentially unpleasant situation. I will also attempt to stay focused on the task at hand and not be distracted by side conversations and other interruptions as much as possible.

I love “grab and go” activity baskets. Some days things just come up and I don’t have time to prepare a more in-depth activity. Fill a basket with some paint pens, paper and stickers? Easy to grab out of a cupboard and then let the kids explore the materials. No intensive cleaning or set up required.

You have to go slow to go fast. Take the time to practive and drill routines over and over. When students are struggling or misbehavior don’t work harder work slower. Go back to the beginning and practice your routines and behavior expectations. This saves time in the end because it will free up time re-explaining everything later in the year.

One of my best time-saving hacks is sticking to a consistent routine. Prepping things ahead of time has been a game changer for me. It is helpful whether at work or at home. It save time and gives me more time to myself or for the children. It also helps create a less stressful and calm day.
