When my children are having tantrums, I redirect and make a song out of it.

I have incorporated brain breaks, yoga, games and movement activities to help move kids back to a regulated state.

There was a specific time when an older toddler was crying and would not put her shoes on. I had to calmly say, “I can not understand you when you are crying. Let’s take a deep breath,” and then model that. Once she was a bit calmer, I went through different options of things that could be wrong and tried to help fix the problem.

It’s a teachable moment for a self regulation skill. If the child is capable of following prompts to use tools to regulate their emotions that we’ve discussed previously (such as a breathing technique or calming sensory tool) then I remind them of those. If they are really distraught, then co-regulation and modeling my own deep breathing, offering a comforting touch if that’s something that helps them.

When a student is having a tantrum, I get to their level and with a calm voice I ask them to take deep breaths to calm our bodies. If it not working, one of the teachers will take the child to the playground for a walk or to the library to read a book. One on one interaction with an upset child tends to help them calm down faster. Sometimes offering a hug or a snack help them to feel better if the child is just tired or hungry.

I guide them over to a quiet area and we talk to find out how the student is feeling and why. Then we talk about our feelings and how we can use our voice to let other’s know, how the action made them feel.. I have one current student, that I’m learning with and from on how to handle his tantrums.

I offer space or a hug and let them decide and then offer alternitves like a puzzle or station i know they prefer or for some students a clams down corner or book nook.

I usually try to turn it into some sort of game or fun breathing activity. I give the child space to feel their emotions while also creating a soothing environment to gradually calm them down. Then we talk about those feelings when the child is ready.

I love redirecting children or letting them calm down in a safe space when tantrums happen. I find giving them space by themselves or a hug helps a lot as it validates their feels and feel safe; redirecting to a new and or similar activity’s that doesn’t restart the tantrum is the goal. Redirecting is healthy and helps them focus in the moment rather than fight what was.

I find using first-then visual clipcards are helpful depending on what type of trigger is responsible for the tantrum. Having clear expectations and caly showing the cards as I repeat the words can help. Or, using a preferred song or touch object like a small stuffy or squishy has often helped to ease these situations.

I would use fun, engaging activities. I would try to use activities that are not overstimulating and can be done or shared by any child.

In my classroom, I use color stickers to help children express their feelings and turn tantrum moments into learning opportunities. Each color represents a different emotion like red is for anger, blue for sadness, green for happiness, purple for confusion and yellow for fear. When a child feels upset, I encourage them to choose a sticker that matches their emotion. This helps them identify and name their feelings, which is the first step in managing their emotions. To keep the classroom happy, I use clear routines. The color sticker system helps children understand their emotions and the expectations in the classroom. When children feel seen and supported, they stay calmer and happier.

I am an in-home childcare provider. My book area has always been the calm area of my room. this area contains a soft rug, stuffed animals. fidget toys and yoga books, also books about feelings. In addition to this area, I have a couch with pillows and blankets. I have a rocking chair; I offer cool cloths. All the children in my care are taught if you need a break, take a break. In the incident of a tantrum I offer what might help this child regulate best. I have only had a few experiences with children that may have ASD. I feel like I am more sensitive to their cues, so I am usually able to “catch” situations before they turn to a tantrum.

I like to use tantrums as a way for a child to connect with their mind and emotions. I always start by removing them from the other students and tell them to focus on their breathing. We together take deep breaths and then once they are more calm I ask them how they are feeling or to show me with their body (Ex. if a child is mad I tell them they can stomp their feet. happy is hopping. sad is spinning.) Usually, their body movements create a distraction from what they are feeling and then they can self regulate.
